Written by Kim Sowoul in 1925, 진달래꽃 is one of the most famous Korean poems. The location, Pyonganbuk which the poem refers to is famous for its Azalea flowers, located in the far north west of North Korea, bordering China. I decided to use my friend Samir's talents to make this video - An American Citizen fluent in Korean. Let me know how well he did, you Koreans out there. Flute was also performed by Samir, A thai Klui I bought him as a souvenir a while back. The original solo material will be lobbed up on my music channel soon I suppose along with a few other things I've been working on.

"May truth and love triumph over lies and hatred." --Vaclav Havel Jeju-do island, South Korea--I take the 무술포 (musulpo) bus every afternoon. My 40-45 minute ride en route to my elementary school consists of several routines. I catch up with the world, half-study Korean, write poetry drafts, and wait for the bus to eventually rock me to sleep. Phone notification: "Breaking News," Kim Jung-il, leader of North Korea, fell ill and died. I checked the news several times that morning and early afternoon... so, it was indeed "breaking" that very moment. I may have been the only person on the bus with the knowledge of Kim Jung-ill's death. The bus wasn't full and no one had their phones open. Three minutes in, I was itching to share the news with the Korean strangers—"hey, (as I scream with sheer madness) Kim Jung-il is DEAD!" Writer-director Park Jung-bum's powerful first feature The Journals of Musan, in which he plays the leading role, deservedly won the Best New Narrative Director Award at Tribeca Film Festival 2011 for its insightful portrait of a North Korean defector in Seoul, so. Korea, grappling with the contradictions of consumer capitalism as he tries to survive, both physically and psychically, on the fringes of society. Park was assistant director on Lee Chang Dong's Poetry. The Journals of Musan was previously screened at festivals in Pusan, Marrakech, Rotterdam and Krakow, where it also won awards. Liza Béar interviewed Park Jung-bum on April 26th during a public screening of his film at the Clearview Cinemas. LA-based poet Chiwan Choi will read from and discuss his new poetry collection, Abductions, and also from his debut collection, The Flood. In Abductions, Choi sets out to write poems about aliens. According to Choi, it seemed like the hot thing to do, with zombie poems and such being published. What he ends up with is a mythology about alien abduction that helps tells the story of his family, including parents who escaped North Korea when they were young, and the miscarriage that he and wife went through. Choi will discuss the creative process between the two very different poetry collections, and the battles he went through in trying to define the personal/political (The Flood) and myth/fact (Abductions), as well as the opinions he has faced being a fringe member of the literary world, not fully embraced by the mainstream, and yet also not being Korean/Asian enough for the Korean-American/Asian-American community.
