Anti-North Korea Leaflets Sent into North Korea
Duration : 97 Seconds

CHAN: Two conservative pro-democracy groups released 10 balloons laden with money and leaflets in Kimpo, South Korea today. One of the groups, Fighters For A Free North Korea, expects the balloons to catch the wind and land across the border into their cut-off communist neighbor. STORY: Each balloon carries envelopes that contain a message and either one US dollar or 10 yuan bill. Some of the messages are reports about North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il, whose ailing health has been reported about in many countries. The groups are also demanding that the North release people abducted from the South. The group already sent two sets of 100000 anti-North Korea leaflets into the North in October and earlier this month. In reaction North Korea threatened to reduce the South to rubble unless it stopped its civic groups from sending anti-Pyongyang literature into the communist state. While sending leaflets into North Korea is not illegal in South Korea, the ministry said authorities would try hard to stop the civic group members from doing so, angering the anti-North campaigners. [Kim Ho-nyeon, Unification Ministry]: "The related authorities, including our Unification Ministry, are aggressively working on it within legal boundaries, urging them not to send leaflets.” Relations between the two states have increasingly frayed since February when, after 10 years of left-leaning leaders, conservative President Lee Myung-bak took office. He's pledged to get tough with Pyongyang ...

Fire Power: Artillery in the Korean War
Duration : 1674 Seconds

thefilmarchive.org The North Korean Army launched the "Fatherland Liberation War" with a comprehensive air--land invasion using 231000 soldiers, who captured scheduled objectives and territory, among them Kaesong, Chuncheon, Uijeongbu, and Ongjin. Their forces included 274 T-34-85 tanks, some 150 Yak fighters, 110 attack bombers, 200 artillery pieces, 78 Yak trainers, and 35 reconnaissance aircraft. In addition to the invasion force, the North Korean KPA had 114 fighters, 78 bombers, 105 T-34-85 tanks, and some 30000 soldiers stationed in reserve in North Korea. Although each navy consisted of only several small warships, the North Korean and South Korean navies fought in the war as sea-borne artillery for their in-country armies. In contrast, the ROK Army defenders were vastly unprepared, and the political establishment in the south, while well aware of the threat to the north, were unable to convince American administrators of the reality of the threat. In South to the Naktong, North to the Yalu (1961), RE Appleman reports the ROK forces' low combat readiness as of 25 June 1950. The ROK Army had 98000 soldiers (65000 combat, 33000 support), no tanks (they had been requested from the US military, but requests were denied), and a 22--piece air force comprising 12 liaison-type and 10 AT6 advanced-trainer airplanes. There were no large foreign military garrisons in Korea at invasion time, but there were large US garrisons and air forces in Japan. Within days of the invasion ...

BR Myers at the World Affairs Council 02 11 2010.wmv
Duration : 294 Seconds

While considerable attention has been focused on following the actions of DPRK officials in Pyongyang, how well do we understand the mindset and culture of North Koreas ordinary citizens? BR Myers argues that we know more of North Koreas clandestine nuclear program than of the motivation behind it. We know more about Kim Jong Ils potential successors than about the unique worldview that North Korean citizens share. Drawing from decades of research on the countrys ideology and propaganda, Myers offers a new understanding of North Korean culture; using multimedia to tell the story of modern-day life in this closed society through its art, unique historic perspective, literature, film, and iconography. A specialist on North Korea, he is a contributing editor to The Atlantic Monthly and a frequent contributor to both NPR and The New York Times, as well as author of The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves - And Why It Matters.

UFO or hoax? Aerial video over South Korea stirs speculation
Duration : 17 Seconds

A new video has surfaced that some claim shows a saucer-shaped UFO zooming past the window of a passenger airplane flying over Seoul, South Korea. In the video, the unidentified passenger is filming the otherwise uneventful view from the plane's window. Suddenly he makes a startled sound as the white saucer-like image comes into view. Later in the video, the purported UFO image is magnified. Ultimately, it looks more like an ivory colored bowler hat than a piece of futuristic flying technology. Is this just bad computer-generated imagery (CGI) and a cheap hoax from a prankster or a genuine unidentified object caught on film? [ Video: Palm-sized Star Trek tech may be closer than you think ] The same writer who speculates on the origin of this object also recently wrote about video taken from one of NASA's live video feeds. In that video, three objects in a triangle formation appear on screen about five minutes into the video. Someone from NASA chimes in to say the object is actually a piece of foil, aka space junk, and that its reflection is giving the appearance of three objects in a triangle formation.
