Onban's main ingredient is chicken, and it's a rice-in-soup dish. It's a dish we specialty for important guests or for special occasions. Pyongyang Onban has a rather romantic origin. There was once a couple in Pyongyang castle who were set to marry each other, when the man got captured at the district office and was thrown in jail. One day a neighbor brought some food, leftover rice and some jijim(fried pancakes) to the lady. She wanted to get the food to her fiance suffering in jail, so she put the jijim on the rice, poured the soup in the rice bowl, then ran to her fiance to bring it to him, which is how Onban was made.

US SUSPENDS FOOD AID TO NORTH KOREA! Pyongyang Plans ROCKET LAUNCH! The United States has suspended its food aid plan to North Korea, as Pyongyang refuses to cancel its rocket launch scheduled for mid-April. Washington claims that the scheduled launch, which North Korea says has nothing to do with nuclear tests, is breaking a deal made between the two countries last month. "This planned launch is highly provocative because it manifests North Korea's desire to test and expand its long-range missile capability," said Peter Lavoy , Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Affairs. Meanwhile, Pyongyang says that the launch's purposes are absolutely peaceful, as the rocket will just take a satellite into orbit. According to the agreement signed by the two countries in February, the US provides food aid to North Korea if it partially freezes its nuclear activities and agrees to a missile test moratorium. North Korea has seen a devastating food shortage in the mid to late 1990's from natural disasters and international isolation. This caused an estimated minimum of 200000 to three million deaths. North Korea's food shortage drew the world's attention at the time. Once North Korea pleaded for food support to the international society in 1995, the World Food Programme, multilateral support organizations and the global community including South Korea worked to provide sufficient food to North Korea. However, North Korea's food shortage continues today despite the truth that it has been well over 10 years since the global community's food support began. The issue is that the North Korean government is more concentrated on military development more than self-sustainable food support. Hardline policies toward South Korea including semiyearly nuclear experiments and long-distance rocket firing are the greatest reasons for the food shortage. Recently UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon announced that a third of the North Korean population are suffering from lack of food and raised his deep concerns on the North Korean human rights issues. However, as sanctions against North Korea are still in effect due to their nuclear experiments, concerns on North Korea's food shortage are heightened as extensive food support is not possible under these circumstances.

In a hospital in Pyongyang, doctors monitor a group of weak infants, some of whom are already showing signs of malnutrition and sickness. They are the most vulnerable members of a population suffering from extreme food shortages. According to the United Nations, one third of all children under the age of five in North Korea are malnourished, and other countries have become less interested in donating food as the "hermit kingdom" battles efforts to constrain its nuclear program. The UN World Food Programme says public distributions are running extremely low, and they are only able to help half the people who need aid. Meanwhile, the countries rulers stage outsized military parades, and some wonder whether food donations are being siphoned off to them. North Korea recently granted a Reuters news crew access to the country, and Al Jazeera'a Khadija Magardie reports on the plight they found.

Pyongyang, April 6 (KCNA) -- The 17th April Holiday Food Festival was held at the People's Palace of Culture from April 4 to 6. The festival brought together 49 units selected from ministries and national institutions and provinces. It involved a contest in technical skill and demonstrations of cooks and waiters and waitresses, shows of local special dishes and famous dishes presented by catering units, an exhibition of achievements made in cooking science and technology, public presentation of experience, etc. Presented to the festival were more than 1 300 national food and various kinds of dishes and over 400 pieces of scientific and technological successes.
