Famine - North Korea
Duration : 1296 Seconds

Oct 1997 Mark Davis reports on the devastating famine in North Korea of 1997, confirming the extent of the food crisis, and that international aid did not get through to the people who need it most. He captures a rare insight into the negotiations between CARE and the government Relief Committee, who complain CARE is not helping enough. The obsessively secretive government wants to direct all aid to the fertile rice bowl areas around the capital, because productivity here is highest. Then they will then be able to feed the starving in the country's north. Williamson disagrees and is granted a rare permit to travel north to judge for himself. The team break the schedule and visit a nursery of their choosing. Here the hungry children are lacklustre and silent. Officially banned from filming in hospitals, desperate doctors allow the camera in. Hungry mothers are supposed to supply food for their children. A family with no men starve more than their more productive neighbours. If you don't work, it seems, you don't eat. This is no socialist famine. The government says the north is not a farming area and shouldn't get aid first. CARE says aid should go to the starving. North Korean River Floods on the Border with China
Duration : 34 Seconds

On Tuesday, North Korea said that about 7000 acres of farmland have flooded due to heavy rains in regions bordering China. After flooding from a rain-swollen river caused more than 5000 people to be removed from affected areas last week, many parts of Shinuiju City were submerged. Massive flooding in recent years has left hundreds of people dead or missing, swept away buildings and inundated farms, prompting North Korea to seek foreign food aid. North Korea can barely feed its 23 million people even with a good harvest due to its hilly terrain and antiquated farming industry.

Farmers dance of Chinas Korean ethnic group
Duration : 607 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Gathering in fields or villages during community festivals, members of the Korean ethnic group in Jilin and other provinces in north-eastern China offer a traditional sacrifice to the God of the Land to pay homage to nature and pray for good fortune and a plentiful harvest. This is the beginning of the farmers dance of Chinas Korean ethnic group, a popular folk practice passed on by senior members of a community to younger generations. Musicians play oboe-like ''suona,'' bell-shaped gongs and a variety of drums, while masked or unmasked dancers move farcically to the accompaniment. The dance is inspired by the motions of farming, which it imitates through gestures such as walking the field ridges. Spreading from its agricultural origins to Korean people of all walks of life in both urban and rural areas, the dance has evolved considerably since it was brought to China at the end of the nineteenth century. For example, the musical ensemble has been expanded to include wind instruments and the dancers costumes have been influenced by the clothes of other Chinese ethnic groups. As the product of accumulated labour and wisdom, the farmers dance remains an important expression of the cultural heritage of Chinas Korean ethnic group. Rice-transplanting Begins in North Korea
Duration : 176 Seconds

Pyongyang, May 12 (KCNA) -- Min Kyong Nam, head of the Workteam No. 3 of the Chongsan Co-op Farm, saying, "Rice-transplanting is a most important farming process vital to yearly harvests. We directed big efforts to cultivating healthy rice seedlings. As you see, seedlings have grown in a desirable way in this season. One seedling has six or seven leaves with 18 or 20 centimeters high. It is doubtless that root striking would be done in a creditable way, if these seedlings are planted. We also gave precedence to harrowing of paddy fields. Thus, we have finished preparing for rice-transplanting." Ri Hyang Sun, a farmer, saying, "On this day 41 years ago, leader Kim Jong Il called at the farm to plant seedlings. We have started this year's rice-transplantation on this significant day. Now we, farmers, are determined to have bumper harvest this year, too, as we did last year, thereby giving pleasure to the dear respected Kim Jong Un." -0- North Korea Nordkorea Corea del Norte Corée du Nord Koreańska Republika Ludowo-Demokratyczna Корейская Народно-Демократическая Республика Kuzey Kore كوريا الشمالية 조선민주주의인민공화국

TORRENTIAL RAIN STORM IN SOUTH & NORTH KOREANS SINCE 26 BY M. REZA SALAMI, Ph.D, PE
Duration : 601 Seconds

Kingdom Hearts Soundtrack - End of the World (Extended Version) Torrential rain storms in South Korea lead to flooding and landslides SEOUL, South Korea — Torrential rains in North Korea have forced thousands of families from their homes and left at least 200 people dead or missing, an aid official said Tuesday, adding that the worst floods there in a decade will worsen Pyongyang's already precarious ability to feed its people. To cope with damage from the storms that began last week, the North has asked the United Nations to assess the situation in affected regions as part of a preliminary request for assistance — an indication of the dire situation in the impoverished nation. North Korea struggles to provide for its people, and as many as 2 million people have died from famine that began in the mid-1990s. The government blamed the famine on natural disasters, but it was also caused by outdated farming methods and the loss of the country's Soviet benefactor.

Jim Rogers - Farmers Will Be Driving Lamborghinis
Duration : 508 Seconds

For the latest Jim Rogers, go to JimRogersBlog.com - Would you rather be in North Korea or South Korea, China or Hong Kong? This is the difference between nations that debase their currencies versus those who don't. The US and UK used to be rich countries. Look at the airports in Asia versus the airport at JFK. The United States is a third world country now. The infrastructure is over in Asia. The United States goes deeper into debt every week and every month. People can say that the debt doesn't matter and we're the greatest nation in the world. You can say that all you want. The people in the UK said the same things in the 50s and 60s, and then in the 70s they went completely bankrupt. The United States dollar is currently the world currency, but that isn't going to last for very long. They will try to keep printing money for that reason, but it isn't going to work. Printing money has never worked in the history of the world. They say that they'll print just for a little bit and then they'll take it back. It's absurd. Politicians say the same things every time. Always. Read some history books and look at what politicians have said. They've been saying this stuff for hundreds of years. You're already starting to see civil unrest. Even in countries that we consider rich and prosperous. It is going to increase and continue. You had better be prepared, or you are going to be one of the ones who suffer badly. A lot of people in Asia are going to be extremely successful ...

In the morning the handlers were stressed out because Ann had disappeared and they thought she ran off, taking pictures and stealing state secrets, as we, foreginers, tend to do. After Ann came back, we zipped out to Nampo City. On the way there we stopped at a collective farm that farmed nothing but songs and pictures instead of the usual potatoes and rice. Later, in Nampo, we visited a fake showpiece orphanage to show how the Dear Leader loves all North Koreans...
