On my trip to Siberia in december 2006 I decided not to travel in an ordinary Russian sleeping car, but in the sleeping car Moskva - Pyongyang, which is leaving Moskva on the 11th and 25th of each month (attached to train no. 1 (Moskva - Vladivistok)). This sleeping car is provided by the state railways of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK). The trip was an interesting possibility to talk with people from North Korea, for whom it was quite sensational to have an Austrian citizen as fellow passenger (all the other passengers as well as the conductors in the sleeping car were DPRK citizen). Using the sleeping car for domestic trips inside Russia is officially not possible, a ticket for a cross-border trip to DPRK is necessary. But it is no problem to get a ticket to the first station in the DPRK (Tumangan) and get off before the border. North Korea allowed Chinese tourists to drive themselves around the state for the first time in history. Around 100 tourists travelled in a convoy of 24 cars in North Korea. Chinese tourists visited various areas in North Korea, attended a performance by local children and had many photos taken. Chinese tourists stayed in facilities prepared for them during their three-day tour of North Korea and had an opportunity to taste delicious dishes in North Korean cuisine. There was food for tourists but hunger grows in North Korea. Six million people face food shortage in the country that has a population of 24 million as it faces international isolation due to its nuclear programme. China that sees North Korea as a strategic barrier against the United States, is North Korea's biggest supporter. An agreement signed between the two countries in 1961 envisaging one helping the other in the event of an attack is still in effect.

Yalu (Amnokkang) River devides the largest border city of China and North Korean Sinuiju town. One can see Korean river bank from the Chinese side. Trains, cars and busses cross the river on bridge. From Dandong, 20 minutes by car and you can reach the North Eastern part of the famous Great Wall. The footage was made in 1996.

OMG. Can't believe the propaganda video and especially the comments in this video: www.youtube.com . I've been to 42 countries in every continent (except South-America) in my life, and the DPRK is absolutely the worst place to be among all. Do not believe in the propaganda you see in certain videos on Youtube (I tried to comment in one of them, but they need an "approval"). You see wide roads, but they have a very few cars on it and still they're bumpy and bad quality. Just one example (there are a hundreds of them like food, heating, civil rights issues). We were travelling on the bumpy - no lanes "highway" for 50 miles with seeing only one moving vehicle. That's also because on sundays it is forbidden to use a car, even if you are among the few lucky citizens who have one.

Even at the height of Soviet power, Moscow would have struggled to choreograph such a mass performance. The politics are surreal. The "prosperous fatherland" reads one giant banner above a mosaic of ploughing tractors - no matter that almost all farmwork is done by hand because vehicles and fuel are in such short supply. "Green revolution" reads another, over an image of bumper crops, despite the fact that the nation has not been able to feed a third of its people for a decade. Rather than crude propaganda, North Koreans see it as a counterattack against the powerful weapons employed by Hollywood and the western media. "The US imperialists are trying to stifle us. They create a negative image of North Korea. I hope Arirang helps to counter that," Song Sok-hwang, the display's director, told the Guardian.
