The artillery shells killed four South Koreans, including two civilians. Most of the 1600 residents fled the mountainous island that lies less than two miles from the disputed sea border and well within range of North Korea's artillery. Now, hungry dogs and cats roam the deserted streets. Members of animal welfare groups took food supplies for the animals and administered first aid to the injured pets. [Jo Hee-kyong, Korean Society for Animal Freedom] "If you abandon dogs, and they produce puppies without people's care, they will become wild dogs. Then you will have to cope with a social problem with many stray dogs all around Yeonpyeong Island." Island residents estimate that there are about 200 dogs and cats on the island. Animal welfare workers said they have helped about 50 dogs and 10 cats so far. [Park So-yeon, Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth]: "We helped dogs with serious cuts from shell splinters. We also saved dogs with broken legs and little dogs attacked by other stray dogs." Tensions on the peninsula are at their highest levels in recent years since the attack, which was one of the heaviest in the region since the Korean War ended in 1953 in a truce without a peace treaty.

The problem is that draft animals need feed and therefore land was lost for the production of crops for human consumption. Where land resources are limited animal draft may not be the solution.

The performance climaxed when the helicopter appeared in a twinkle of an eye and lifted a box which contained a magician whose whole body was tied with a rope after appearing on the stage. South Korea, which is also suffering from the disease, says the North hasn't asked for help. North Korea has confirmed outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in several areas. It comes as the number of cases in South Korea has reduced, after massive culling and vaccination operations. South Korean media say the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization would dispatch an expert team next week to help North Korea contain the outbreak, while some media said the hunger-stricken North might be exaggerating the outbreak to receive food aid. The North's official media confirmed the outbreak of the disease late Tuesday (February 8). The disease has spread to more than 10000 cattle and pigs across eight provinces. North Korean media say a national emergency veterinary and anti-epizootic committee has been set up, while all the catering networks and markets have stopped selling meat from the affected areas. South Korean unification ministry spokesman Chun Hae-sung says the North did not ask the South for help containing the disease. No Media Coverage of this totally perverted Mass Murder of the South Korean Government. The animals were buried alive and the caterpillars drove over the earth on the animals to crush them. It was one of the biggest crimes against animals and absolutely disgusting! These people should be punished! Of course, this was politically motivated for not destroying the US build up image of the "good South" and the "bad North".
