The Ryugyong Hotel (or Ryu-Gyong Hotel or Yu-Kyung Hotel or the 105 Building) is a towering, empty concrete shell that was once intended for use as a hotel in Sojang-dong, in the Potong-gang District of Pyongyang, North Korea. The hotel's name comes from one of the historic names for Pyongyang: Ryugyong, or "capital of willows". Its 105 stories rise to a height of 330 m (1083 ft), and it boasts some 360000 m² (3.9 million ft²) of floor space, making it the most prominent feature of the city's skyline and by far the largest structure in that country. Construction started in 1987 and reached a cessation in 1992. If the building were ever completed, it would be the world's tallest hotel and the seventh largest building in the world.[1] However, as of 2006, it remains unfinished and uninhabited.

Sample of North Korean TV recorded off-air live during a trip there in August 2011. This was the station as received in our hotel. apparently they are supposed to have 3 channels, but we only received this 1, which appeared to be a compile of the best of the channels, but is hard to confirm. This was the promo for the Yangakkdo Hotel, Pyongyang in which we were staying, which runs on the hotel TV network after close down of general broadcast.

Trip To North Korea, 1Sept10 to 11Sept10. This was the first hotel we stayed at in Pyongang. I would recommend this over the Koryo if you want to get away from other westerners. Nice Hotel with Int'l television, and a good bar to drink with your minder away from prying eyes.

Train travel from China to North Korea: Beijing-Pyongyang. See Videos 2, 3 and 4 for the walking tour of the DPRK. This was a propaganda tour that brings tourists to the country's showcase cities and most fertile regions. I posted these videos to give people who are thinking about visiting North Korea an overview of what they will likely see there (A variety of tours are offered but in general the itineraries are similar). These videos are not truncated or narrated, making them long and often boring, but NK footage is rare, so more is better in this case. I was mostly allowed to film openly because, again, it was of the best areas with the better fed and dressed elite population that the NK government wants the outside world to see -- which is poor, yet not much worse off than Eastern Europe or China was in the late 1970's. Don't be fooled though, these images are not representative of most of North Korea. Look for hidden videos smuggled out to see how too many North Koreans live, with oppression, famine, orphans, and not to mention the 200000 political victims living in soviet style Gulag camps. Should you hurry up and visit North Korea before it collapses? Unfortunately, you likely have many years to plan a trip, because nothing looks to change anytime soon. During the hours that the single national North Korean television channel (KCTV) is not on air, the Yanggakdo International Hotel guest room cable network runs movies, DPRK music videos and information clips on the hotel televsions. This video is the hotel information guide that is shown a number of times each day including at 6AM and when KCTV closes each night. The video quality of this YouTube video is consistent with the quality received on the hotel television and was captured directly from the hotel's analog video network in August 2011.
