Pyongyang, August 1 (KCNA) -- The performance of the grand gymnastic and artistic extravaganza "Arirang", a winner of Kim Il Sung Prize, began with due ceremony at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang on Monday evening on the 63rd anniversary of the birthday of the DPRK. "Arirang" gave its premiere in 2002. The creating staff produced new scenes depicting the mental power of the servicepersons and people of the DPRK who have brought about eye-opening events under the leadership of the great party and its proud appearance. Among the audience were Kim Ki Nam and Choe Ryong Hae, secretaries of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, DPRK Vice-Premier Kang Nung Su, officials of working people's organizations, ministries and national institutions, servicepersons of the People's Army and working people in Pyongyang. Present there on invitation were overseas compatriots and foreign guests. An Tong Chun, minister of Culture, said in his speech that "Arirang" would instill fresh energy and courage into the servicepersons and people and demonstrate the appearance of single-mindedly united socialist Korea and the wisdom and talents of Koreans. As the melody of the song "His Ideal" resounded forth, such slogans as "Highest Tribute to the Great Leader, Father of Nation" and "Highest Glory to the Great Leader Comrade Kim Jong Il" appeared on the background one after another. Pyongyang, February 15 (KCNA) -- The 21st Paektusan Prize International Figure Skating Festival opened Wednesday with due ceremony at the Ice Rink in Pyongyang to commemorate the birth anniversary of leader Kim Jong Il. Present at the ceremony were Kim Yong Nam, Choe Ryong Hae, officials concerned, sportspersons and working people. Also attending it were the overseas Koreans' delegations, compatriots, the chief of the Pyongyang mission of the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front and foreign guests. Figure skaters from the DPRK, Russia, China, Bulgaria, France and Finland entered the ice rink. Minister of Physical Culture and Sports Pak Myong Chol made an opening address. Then followed a demonstration performance "Great sun of Songun shining all over the world". The DPRK figure skaters staged colorful numbers such as "Fortune of Korea", "Song of love for people" and "Footsteps." They impressively represented the faith and will of all the service persons and people to make this year a year of prosperity to be specially recorded in the glorious history of Kim Il Sung's nation, Kim Jong Il's Korea under the leadership of the dear respected Kim Jong Un, holding Kim Jong Il, eternal heart and great power of the DPRK, in high esteem. Pyongyang, April 6 (KCNA) -- A national Taekwon-do festival opened with due ceremony at the Taekwon-Do Hall on Friday on the occasion of the birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung, the Day of the Sun. Ace Taekwon-doists from across the country will compete in various events such as men's and women's individual pattern and sparring matches. An opening address was made by Kim Kyong Ho, chairman of the Korean Taekwon-Do Committee. Then Taekwon-do demonstrations were given by instructors and players. Meanwhile, paduk (go) and Korean wrestling events of the above-said festival took place in Wonsan and Sariwon from March 28 to April 6. Men players of the Pyongyang City Taekwon-Do Team and women players of Korea University of Physical Education came first in the group of paduk players, boy players of Pyongyang and girl players of North Hamgyong Province in the group of kindergarteners and Kangwon Province in the group of elders. Pyongyang, April 6 (KCNA) -- A national sports festival for Mangyongdae Prize was opened with due ceremony at Kim Il Sung Stadium Friday to commemorate the centenary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung. During the festival its participants will compete in some 40 events including soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, weightlifting, judo, gymnastics, track-and-field, swimming, archery and figure skating. They will take place in Pyongyang, Phyongsong, Wonsan, Nampho, Samjiyon and other areas. Pak Myong Chol, minister of Physical Culture and Sports, in his opening address called on all sportspersons and coaches to glorify the revolutionary career and exploits of great persons of Mt. Paektu and prove successful in physical culture and sports this year. He then declared the festival open. The speakers called upon the sportspersons and coaches to brush up Korean-style sports techniques through ideological, fighting spirit, speed and technical campaigns and thus demonstrate before the whole world the dignity and honor of Kim Il Sung's nation and Kim Jong Il's Korea with gold medals. The festival brought together figure skaters of the DPRK, Russia, France and the Czech Republic. Its opening ceremony took place at the Ice Rink on Tuesday Present there were Kim Ki Nam, Yang Hyong Sop, Kang Sok Ju, Choe Ryong Hae and others. Congratulatory groups of overseas Koreans, the chief of the Pyongyang mission of the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front and foreign guests were on hand. Pak Myong Chol, minister of Physical Culture and Sports, in an opening address said that this festival would mark a significant occasion in developing the unity, cooperation and sports technique among sports persons. An opening performance was given by Korean figure skaters. Mass games or mass gymnastics are a form of performing arts or gymnastics in which large numbers of performers take part in a highly regimented performance that emphasizes group dynamics rather than individual prowess. Because of the vast scale of the performance, with often tens of thousands of performers, mass games are performed in stadiums, often accompanied by a background of card-turners occupying the seats on the opposite side from the viewers. Mass games are typically used to emphasize themes of political propaganda. They developed alongside 19th century nationalist movements, particularly the Czech Sokol movement, as they embodied youth, strength, militarism, and unity.[citation needed] Today, mass games are regularly performed only in North Korea, where they take place to celebrate national holidays such as the birthdays of rulers Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. In recent years, they have been the main attraction of the Arirang Festival in Pyongyang. The 2004 film A State of Mind details the training of two young girls from Pyongyang who perform in the mass games.

Pyongyang, April 6 (KCNA) -- The 17th April Holiday Food Festival was held at the People's Palace of Culture from April 4 to 6. The festival brought together 49 units selected from ministries and national institutions and provinces. It involved a contest in technical skill and demonstrations of cooks and waiters and waitresses, shows of local special dishes and famous dishes presented by catering units, an exhibition of achievements made in cooking science and technology, public presentation of experience, etc. Presented to the festival were more than 1 300 national food and various kinds of dishes and over 400 pieces of scientific and technological successes. Appreciated at the festival were popular food presented by restaurants under the General Bureau of Public Service including Okryu Restaurant, Chongryu Restaurant, Changgwang Restaurant Management Office and Chilsong Restaurant, catering units under the Kyonghung and Rakwon Guidance Bureaus and Taedonggang and Moranbong district restaurants management offices. Drawing attention of experts and participants were varieties of food prepared with local specialties in South Hamgyong, North Phyongan and Jagang provinces and Rason City.
