Inside Somalia, Tabda, Kenyan troops pursuing the Al Shabaab ragtag militia had their first reported face - to - face combat with the terror gang, in a fierce fire fight that left 9 insurgents dead and 2 Kenyan soldiers wounded. As operation 'Linda Nchi' entered its 12th day, military spokesperson major Emmanuel Chirchir said the two injured Kenyan soldiers had been airlifted to Nairobi for treatment. But, as the battle in Tabda raged on, foreign affairs assistant minister Richard Onyonka told journalists this evening that the Kenya Government was able and willing to negotiate with the Al Shabaab, but quickly threw in a caveat...that the terror gang had to first renounce violence. The Kenya defense forces continue to push into Al Shabaab strongholds, in the eighth day of operation Linda Nchi. Forces allied to Kenyan defense forces have reportedly hit the Al Shabaab central command in Kismayu from the air. The commanders of both the Kenya Defense forces and the Federal Transitional Government of Somalia are pushing towards Kismayu, a stronghold of the Al Shabaab. Back at home security has been beefed up in and around the city in the wake of threats of retaliatory attacks by the al Shabaab.

Kenya will cut diplomatic ties with Eritrea if allegations that the horn of Africa country was supplying weapons to Al Shabaab in Somalia are confirmed. According to Foreign Affairs Minster Moses Wetangula the government had summoned Eritrean ambassador to Kenya, Beyeme Russom to clarify the issue.

minister Raila Odinga sought and secured during his recent visit to Israel continues has forced the premier's office to clarify that he had only asked for help in boosting homeland security and not in the fight against Al Shabaab militants. The office of the prime minister dismissed statements made by defence minister Yusuf Hajj that the position he expressed on Kenya's internal security after his visit from Israel was personal. Meanwhile, Eritrea has formally complained to the Un Security Council following Kenya's claims that it was supplying weapons to the Islamist insurgents. Eritrea wants an independent body to determine the dispute. Sheila Sendeyo has that report.

But tonight, the government says it's not at war with Somalia but it's only helping her North Eastern neighbour to stabilize. Foreign affairs minister Moses Wetangula, who has returned from Mogadishu, said the ongoing operation is aimed at ensuring the security of not only Kenyans, but the people of Somalia. As Jane Kiyo reports, both Kenya and Somalia's transitional federal government, which has pledged its support for the operation, have agreed on a common strategy to wipe out the Al Shabaab militia.

On the warfront , Kenya's operation 'linda nchi' has entered its 4th day today but with heavy rains slowing down the movement of troops who are in hot pursuit of al Shabaab insurgents deep inside Somalia. Three al-Shabaab stronghold villages have now been captured. This comes as foreign affairs minister Moses Wetangula and his defence counterpart Yusuf Haji disclosed how a last minute route change saved them from an explosion while winding up their trip to Somalia. Wetangula has also reiterated that Kenya was fighting the al-Shabaab at the behest of the Somali federal transition government, and the incursion did not amount to an invasion.

It is emerging that a change of tact by the Al-Shabaab militia is what has slowed down Kenya's operation Linda Nchi. The Kenyan military says plans to capture the Al-Shabaab havens of Kismayu and Afmadow are being delayed as the militants shed their military garbs and seek to blend with civilians. This has in turn posed a challenge to the Kenyan forces, who are keen not to occasion heavy civilian casualties in combat activity. This comes as the police gave amnesty to about 30 Kenyan youth believed to have been indoctrinated by the Al Shabaab militia in exchange for information on their operations in the country.
