Kenyan Painter Geraldine Robarts
Duration : 185 Seconds

Jetset Extra visits with Kenya-based artist Geraldine Robarts, whose vibrant, brilliantly colored paintings are favorites of locals and tourists alike. Robarts' parents and grandparents were artists of one stripe or another, so she grew up with pencil and brush in hand, but it was her Baha'i faith and love of Kenyan culture that inspired such authentic, powerful works of art. Geraldine currently works with the local community to encourage others to turn traditional Masai arts and crafts into important sources of revenue. Short documentary about the Watoto wa Kwetu Trust
Duration : 594 Seconds

This short documentary introduces the Watoto wa Kwetu Trust, a Kenyan NGO that teaches art skills to children in the Mathare slum in Nairobi. ("Watoto wa Kwetu" means "our children of the neighborhood.") Founded in 2004, the Watoto wa Kwetu Trust has to date taught more than 4000 children to draw and paint. In this video, Watoto wa Kwetu Trust founders, instructors and participants talk about the importance of the program in their lives. In particular, the children talk about how making art has helped them deal with tough issues, like the 2007 post-election violence in Kenya, as well as HIV and AIDS. In June 2009, Nairobi's RaMoma Museum of Modern Art exhibited paintings by children participating in the Watoto wa Kwetu Trust program. Most of the paintings in the RaMoma show dealt with Kenyan eleectoral issues and the post-2007 election violence To buy art by the Watoto wa Kwetu Trust, or to make a donation, contact: watotowakwetu@yahoo.com, fmuruka@yahoo.com or ramoma@africaonline.co.ke. This short documentary was directed, shot, edited and produced by Maya Alexandri. For more of her work, please see www.mayaalexandri.com.

Subaland - Kenya
Duration : 590 Seconds

Subaland Video featuring the heritage of the Abasuba community living in Western Kenya. The Abasuba (or Suba) live mainly on Mfangano Island of Lake Victoria. Mfangano alone has more than seven clans. Some of them include: Wakinga, Kaswanga, Wiramba, Musokoro, Kakiaya and Wakura. Although classified as Bantus, the Suba people have adapted fully to the Nilotic communities around them without losing their unique heritage. Suba Language is closely related to the Kisii and Maragoli of Western Kenya. One of the most striking cultural phenomena in this region is rock art. Carving in many shapes, colours and sizes, the rock art is explained in various beliefs within the community. The main rock art sites in Mfangano Island are Mawanga and Kwitone. Other tourist attraction features include rock gongs, rock cupules, sacred island, sacred forests, peace trees, pre-colonial settlements and a diversity of birds. A mausoleum of Tom Mboya, an eminent independence era politician, is a historical gem of Rusinga Island. And the new Abasuba Museum crowns it all. In addition, Ruma National Park is located within driving distance in Mainland Sindo. The park is known for its population of the rare Roan antelope.
