KENYA - The Swahilis of Maasai Mara
Duration : 306 Seconds

Dive into the beauty of the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti ... learn about the Swahilis ... one of Africa's most prominent tribes ... The Swahili are a people and culture found on the coast of East Africa, mainly the coastal regions and the islands of Kenya and Tanzania, and north Mozambique. The name Swahili is derived from the Arabic word Sawahil, meaning "coastal dwellers", and they speak the Swahili language. They also speak the official languages of their respective countries: English in Tanzania and Kenya, Portuguese in Mozambique, Somali in Somalia, and French in Comoros. Note that only a small fraction of those who use Swahili are first language speakers and even fewer are ethnic Swahilis. The Masai are an indigenous African ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Due to their distinctive customs and dress and residence near the many game parks of East Africa, they are among the most well-known African ethnic groups internationally. They speak Maa, which is a part of the Nilo-Saharan language family — similar languages include Dinka, Nuer, Turkana — and Songhai, and are also educated in the official languages of Kenya and Tanzania: Swahili and English. The Maasai population has been variously estimated as 377089 from the 1989 Census or as 453000 language speakers in Kenya in 1994[2] and 430000 in Tanzania in 1993 with a total estimated as "approaching 900000" Estimates of the respective Maasai populations in both countries are ...

In Focus: Water Wars in Kenya and Ethiopia
Duration : 357 Seconds

Learn more: pulitzercenter.org World Water Day on March 22 reminds us of the 1 billion people on Earth who lack easy access to the water most of us take for granted. Global climate change is making that struggle worse, as we see in this report from the rugged region of southern Ethiopia, where drought is drying up wells, threatening an ancient way of life and fueling conflict. Reporting from Ethiopia and Kenya, Seattle-based multimedia journalists Sarah Stuteville, Jessica Partnow and Alex Stonehill from The Common Language Project, Kenyan journalist Ernest Waititu of AfrikaNews.org and project intern and videographer Julia Marino of Ohio University take an in-depth look at East Africans' struggles for water and how the actions of Americans are both alleviating and intensifying the problem. This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Water Wars: Ethiopia and Kenya" (bit.ly Credits: Video by Julia Marino and Alex Stonehill with reporting by Ernest Waititu Special thanks to Salihu Sultan and the Ethiopian Red Cross Produced by the Common Language Project in association with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting As featured on Foreign Exchange, an Azimuth Media production.
