Somali refugees have become the victims of the worst drought to hit the Horn of Africa in nearly sixty years. Faced with starvation and caught in conflict, thousands of Somalis are fleeing their country and heading for Kenya. They have traveled through harsh conditions with little food or water, and no humanitarian assistance. Many head across the border to northern Kenya into Dadaab refugee camp expecting help. But drought has hit almost every country in the Horn of Africa. Somalis have been fleeing from war for years now, but this is a different kind of exodus. The refugees are forced to leave their land because they risk dying of starvation at home. Nazanine Moshiri reports from Dobley, Somalia.

The floodwaters are destroying the food crops while they are still in the farms. Further, the roads leading out of the farms are becoming impassable hence the produce is not getting to market, as it ought to.

The government and other stakeholders agree on the need to diversify crop consumption from maize but there stands the challenge of getting people to change their eating habits. One of the causes of the low performance in crop produce is post-harvest losses which account for up to 30% of the loss in produce. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Kenya's food sufficiency level stands at 46%. Food prices are tipped to go up as the year goes along and food availability may become a challenge later in the year.There are plans to shield the consumer from high food prices using various policy changes including the Price Control Bill which the Director of Tegemeo Institute, Mary Mathenge, says should also factor in provision for production costs.

This short film features people in Kenya who have seen the price of staples such as maize, beans and oil soar in the last two years. Many families are now getting by on only one meal a day. In the film, one woman says that she often misses her meals altogether so she can feed her children. Concern is responding to this crisis. In the Kerio Valley, we have successfully piloted a programme that uses mobile phone technology to give cash to the most vulnerable families so they can buy food. Marsabit and Kalacha we are working with partner agency Community Initiatives Facilitation and Assistance (Cifa) to help people manage the effects of drought.

Nov 2007 Concern over food miles is threatening the livelihood of African farmers. There are calls for imported products to lose their organic status. Many see the move as yet another trade barrier. "It's developed countries who are causing global warming. But who is suffering more -- Africans!" laments Kenyan farming advocate, Eustace Kiarii. If Kenyan food lost its organic label, "it would be an economic disaster for the country". There are claims the move is; "just another non-tariff barrier to trade". As Kiarii points out, transport is only one aspect of a product's carbon footprint. Unlike Europeans, African farms don't rely on heated greenhouses and use less machinery. Ironically, Kenyan farmers are already being affected by climate change. Seasonal rainfall is becoming less predictable every year, seriously affecting harvests. Excellent supports community groups in semi-arid rural Kenya to improve their enviroment sustainably through soil and water conservation, improving food and water supply, health and incomes. The key activities are terracing land, building sand dams and planting trees. These three work together to significantly improve conservation of soil and water in this delicate environment. Excellent Development field staff visit farmers on their farms to provide support to increase food production. After terracing land and maximising the use of available water, techniques such as intercropping, zero grazing, using cover crops and drought resistant crops can dramatically increase yields. "When Excellent Development Kenya started working with us, Field Officer Muthama trained us on terracing and I took the initiative. He laid the standard terraces for me and I dug and there is a big change. My harvest increased from 3 bags of 90kgs to 8 bags of 90kg. I am encouraged and I will dig the whole farm. Terraces conserve water. My orange trees don't dry anymore and I am happy." Mr Mutunga Ngitu, Kilili Catchment
