Every year, tens of thousands of migrant workers from Kyrgyzstan travel to the Central Asian economic powerhouse of Kazakhstan in search of employment. Thousands of these migrant workers, often together with their children, find work in tobacco farming, where many are subjected to abuse and exploitation by employers supplying tobacco to Philip Morris Kazakhstan, a subsidiary of Philip Morris International, one of the world's largest tobacco companies.

Karaganda-Astana Susie is having a day off today so it's my turn to stun you with my take on the visual delights etc. It was only a short drive today, 242ks, so we were able to have a leisurely breakfast and wait for the day to warm up a bit before setting off. The very cold breeze had gone so it was quite nice in the sunshine, with another brilliantly fine day and unlimited visibility. The landscape changed to green again as we proceeded north but in any direction you looked were derelict mines, industrial sights and collective farms in ruins. A bit dismal but it's also nice to see new farming ventures replacing the old. We saw the biggest paddock of wheat growing that either of us had ever seen, and there was a lot of it all the way here. The Scrap Dealers have plenty to work with. I don't think I've ever seen so much rusting machinery laying about. The road was excellent and 4 lanes in places, but it does make it hard to slow down when they have a 40k limit on a dual carriageway. Yes, we got 'pinged' and we are now looking forward to the border to see how good they are at collecting the fine. It was a fair cop this time although we were only doing what all the locals do. The one in China was less than a fair cop. So ...

Up to one third of Uzbekistan's workforce is made to labour on cotton farms; denied ownership of the land they work, and forced to labour without reasonable wages they are unable to opt out of cotton cultivation -- those who try are subject to violence, imprisonment and intimidation. Tens of thousands of children are forced to pick the cotton harvest each year. Crucially, the suffering caused by this industry comes at the hands of the government. It is the Uzbek state, not the country's mafia that instigates the abuses connected to the production and sale of cotton turning its people in to a slave nation. In Uzbekistan, tens of thousands of children, some as young as seven, are taken out of school and forced to work in the cotton fields for little or no money during the harvest. The period can last up to three months, during which older children live in dormitories or classrooms under harsh conditions. The combined effect of exhausting work, a poor diet, lack of clean water and exposure to toxic pesticides has a dramatic impact on health. The cotton industry has also caused an ecological disaster. Although all were born in different communities (Owen on the Horse Islands, Rob in Nipper's Harbor, and Lorne in Tilt Cove) they all call LaScie home. The original Roustabout was formed several years ago when Owen came down off his "rockin' years" and began to take a shine to more traditional music. Since that time, Roustabout has gone from seven — as a result of retirements and work commitments — to the present three members. Owen's roots are with the guitar, but he also plays bass and mandolin, and is the lead vocalist for the group; Lorne plays harmonica and button accordion; and Rob contributes with some rhythm guitar, a bit of percussion (ugly stick) and sings the occasional tune. Rob writes most of the band's material, although Lorne and Owen have been known to chip in every now and again.
