July 1996 Kazakhstan's first soap opera, "Crossroads" is no ordinary Programme - it is teaching its viewers to come to terms with life after communism. In the control room, the countdown begins. The cameras are ready and the make up lady puts down her brush.Its characters from ethnic Russian and Kazakh families learn to deal with market economy and their new social freedom. After losing his job as a state engineer, Russian Gleb runs his own cafe, pays off his loans and attempts to save his marriage to a Kazakh women. The script editor sees these characters as role models for the multi ethnic population. In a windy orchard, 'Uncle Ivan' plays out a real life drama. Like Gleb he also lost his state salary and now runs his own restaurant. He enjoys having to "do everything yourself". Should he need guidance in warding off the Mafia or filling in tax returns, he only has to tune into "Crossroads". The show even employs a resident political analyst to advise on its storyline. There is a kind of secret in all this I did not mention yet: Integrity. Though life looks like a washing machine in reverse - the laundry getting more dirty the longer the washing is on - where people end upside down in the process, their soul in hell, their values corrupted. But when the door of the «life-washer» finally opens and confusion as well as destruction look unbearable, there seems to be some sort of integrity surviving in all this that takes my breath. CHAN: Khulan Chuluun was picked for her role as the fearless wife of Genghiz Khan by chance. She was queuing at the Chinese embassy in the Mongolian capital when a casting agent approached her. Two years later and soon she'll be queuing up at the Oscars. Let's take a look. STORY: [Khulan Chuluun, Actress]: "She asked me if I am Mongolian or not and I said Yes, she explained to me about the film and that they needed an actress and asked me if I wanted to try out for it. I said OK and that's how it happened." Then a student, she said the adjustment was hard. But, apparently everyone in Mongolia knows how to ride a horse. "Actually everything for me was difficult. The only easy thing for me was to ride a horse." The film has changed Chuluun's life completely. She married a Kazakh man who played a small role in it and is now settled in Kazakhstan. He apparently fell in love with her before they even meet, looking at her picture. Financed by Kazakh investors and shot by Russian director Sergei Bodrov, "Mongol" is about Mongol conqueror Genghiz Khan. It's been nominated for best foreign film at this year's Oscars, a first for Kazakhstan. At the Academy Awards in Hollywood on the 24th of February, it will compete against "The Counterfeiters" from Austria, "Katyn" from Poland, the Israeli war drama "Beaufort," and Russia's "12".
