Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan's president, has approved a new law aimed at putting an end to religious extremism. The law forces all religious organisations to re-register and bans prayer in state institutions such as schools and prisons. The country's chief imam believes that preventing Muslims from praying will antagonise the Kazakh public. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from Kazakhstan's western city of Aktobe.

The bottles' labels also suggest the vodka packs a sizeable kick with the slogan: "Allah's strength is enough for everybody." While alcohol has generally played an important role in Christianity, it is forbidden in Islam and the bottles, which appeared in the eastern city of Semey, have angered religious Kazakhs. "The only salvation for those who did this is to repent," Bekzat Boranbai uly, an Imam in Semey, told the KTK television station. "Allah is against alcohol and this is mockery." Although many Kazakhs drink vodka, a habit they acquired when Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union, religion has become increasingly important over the past decade. Officials moved to dampen the furore over the vodka by calling on Geom, the local company which produces the Baiterek brand, to withdraw stocks from shops. A spokesman for Geom said ignorance was the root cause of the error. She said that the labelling had been produced in neighbouring Russia and that because nobody in the company speaks Arabic, they didn't realise the word Allah was on the front of the bottle. Like the other four Central Asian states, Kazakhstan was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. Russian and Kazakh are the state languages. Most Kazakhs are Sunni Muslims but, although religion is growing in popularity, the majority treat it lightly. With violence and government crackdowns making headlines from so many familiar parts of the world, there's hardly been a peep in the media about the biggest and ugliest massacre of all: Last Friday in Kazakhstan, riot police slaughtered up 70 striking oil workers, wounding somewhere between 500 and 800, and arresting scores. Almost as soon as the massacre went down in the western regional city of Zhanaozen, the Kazakh authorities cut off access to twitter and cell phone coverage--effectively cutting the region off from the rest of the world, relegating the massacre into the small news wire print. But not before someone was able to get a video out to YouTube last Friday, showing the moment when the striking oil workers--who have put up with inhuman, medieval abuse for months now, culminating with the murders a few months back of a striking oil worker and the 18-year-old-daughter of another union organizer, as well as the jailing of a labor lawyer working with the striking oil workers. Keep in mind, the oil company whose workers are striking for better pay and union recognition, KazMunaiGaz, is "owned" by the billionaire son-in-law of Kazakhstan's Western-backed president-for-life. In many American minds this is Kazakhstan (video). I am going to show you the real Kazakhstan with its history, culture, great nature, and amazing architecture. Kazakhstan is a country in the heart of Eurasia. It's bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It's the ninth largest territory in the world and the world's largest landlocked country with many different types of nature. Kazakhstan has a vast flat steppe extending from the Volga in the west to the Altai Mountains in the east and from the plains of western Siberia in the north to oases and deserts of Central Asia in the south. Kazakhstan's history goes back thousands of years; I will give you a brief overview. The indigenous Kazakhs were a nomadic Turkic people who belonged to several divisions of Kazakh hordes. Their tribes fell under Mongol rule in the 13th century and they were dominated by Tartar khanates until the area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century. During the USSR Kazakhstan became agricultural and industrial center. The Soviet Union built the largest space center in the world called Baikonur in Central Kazakhstan, where the first man in space Yuri Gagarin was launched from. Kazakhstan obtained its independence from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991 and proclaimed its membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
