Jordan Vandenberge - NEWS 25 - Lack of Rain, Lack of Profits for Western Kentucky Farmers
Duration : 116 Seconds

I shot, wrote, and edited this piece with meteorologist Scott Dimmich reporting Jordan Vandenberge - Multimedia Journalist www.jvandenberge.wordpress.com While most of the Tri-state could use a soaking rain, western Kentucky farmers are being hit the hardest. "It's will rain. It just hasn't yet," says Bob White, a Sturgis, Kentucky farmer. Because it hasn't, farmers like Bob White have bigger bills, plummeting profits, and 800 unhappy heifers. "You can tell by looking at the grass there's nothing for the cows to eat. We've been supplementing for about a month, we've had to, the ponds have gone dry," says White. His list of losses isn't just limited to livestock. On an average year, White says the soybean plant will come up to chest height. But this year, they only come up to waist height. The difference in height is only mere feet but can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in loss. "Misery loves it's company, I guess," says White, "There may be even places in worse shape than what we have. The rain has been so spotty that nobody has a really good crop anywhere" The latest National Weather Service Drought Monitor issued Thursday places much of western Kentucky in a moderate drought. The Palmer Drought Index, a longer range assessment of the drought, also has western Kentucky in a moderate drought. It suggests the area needs roughly 5.5" of rain to see the drought come to an end. Until this pattern changes, White will have to make changes of his own. "You make ...

My personal philosophy on farming: Growing up on the farm has given me such a passion and respect for farming and the dedication that's put into it. It has made me want to educate consumers and share that passion with as many as possible, while encouraging them to support their local farmers.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil production by Dr. Fayez Sabri Jaber Farms
Duration : 158 Seconds

"Dr. Fayez Jaber, a well-known, in Germany educated, professor of physics, started investing in farms in Jordan, with a vision: He wanted to grow products which not only reflected and valued the exceptional character of this country, but also were able to respect and harmonize with its unique environment. Taking a purely scientific approach to farming, Dr. Jaber has been able to pursue this dream by transferring the acquired facilities into state-of the-art organic farms, which concentrate on products that are suitable and native to the region. All produce is now organically grown and will be certified within the next two years." www.fj-farms.com

Villages on the Front Line - Jordan Part 1 of 3
Duration : 308 Seconds

Jordan is in the part of the world where farming began. Ninety percent of the country receives less than 25 centimetres of rain a year. Without the farmers it would revert to desert. Down the centuries they were ingenious at developing sophisticated methods to use water sparingly: now lapsed into disrepair, the water channels that fed Petra are evidence of this skill. But Jordan, with a burgeoning human population swelled by refugees from the Middle East conflicts, faces a crisis. Demand for water is so great that the Dead Sea itself is predicted to disappear. The authorities have been forced to ration water severely, restricting families to only one day a week. Despite rising domestic demand, 65% of the water is used by the farmers who stop the land becoming true desert. Jordanian TV reporter, Rula Amin, believes that the media spend too much time on political issues and too little on the water crisis. She travels the length of the country and reports on whether a balance can be found to accommodate the needs of the agricultural community and the rest of the Jordanian population in tackling the problem of chronic water shortages. Is a local or regional conflict inevitable? What will happen to the Dead Sea if the countries sharing the Jordan River cannot reach an agreement?
