TODAY MARKS 16 YEARS SINCE TERRORIST ATTACK ON CENTRAL BANK Posted on 31 January 2012. Today marks 16 years since the terrorist attack, one of the deadliest carried out by terrorist outfit on the Central Bank.It was on 31 January 1996 that the LTTE launched a suicide terrorist attack on the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, which is considered as the heart of Sri Lanka's economy. 91 innocent persons, including Bank employees were killed in this brutal attack while over 1400 sustained injuries. Over 100 became totally blind due to the attack. A truck loaded with powerful explosives crashed through the main gate of the Bank As the gunmen traded fire with the security guard, the suicide bomber in the truck detonated the massive bomb which tore through Bank and also damaged eight other nearby buildings. Among the injured were foreigners including those from the United States, Japan and the Netherlands. The Colombo High Court imposed a prison sentence of 200 years on terrorist leader Velupillai Prabhakaran with regard to this attack. It also led to building an opinion in the globe against the terrorists. A similar attack was unleashed on New York on September 11th several years after the Central Bank attack its reference similar to the Central Bank attack by the terrorists was a notable feature. Sri Lankans are now fortunate that by not only the Central Bank building had been constructed but the terrorists too had been totally eliminated and peace enshrined in the country.
