This video is my attempt to capture an image of a lifestyle in Japan which may soon be gone. Though farming was an important lifestyle in Japan for centuries, few young people are choosing this way of life which many see as difficult and with little chance of a good quality of life. The children of Japanese farmers are more often now choosing to leave the farm to pursue life and opportunity in Japan's bustling urban settings. With college degrees and high-paying jobs there is little reason for such young people to consider returning to the family farm despite the fact that many hold a sentimental longing for an once idealized, simple and humble way of life. After farmers such as those in this video are gone there may be nobody willing to take over their small, family farms. Neglected and abandoned farms may then be reclaimed by nature as this old way of life fades from the landscape as well as the minds of the Japanese people. I often encounter lost farms while exploring in the hills and mountains of central Japan, which cause me to think of the people who once cared for the land and received sustenance from it. There is a quality of character in such people which I respect and admire and which I believe lies at the heart of the character of the Japanese. I was amazed when I saw this RC helicopter being used to spray fertilizer over rice fields in northern Japan ! They have this guy walking around with a controller from field to field flying the helicopter doing its job ! Pretty cool !

Emi Morita visited us at Farm Radio some years ago and it was a great pleasure to meet her again, now on her honeymoon in Europe with her new farmer husband Toshiaki Tani. John Holman met them at Launceston Farm, Tarrant Launceston near Blandford in Dorset where they were the guests of Sarah Worrall and family in their great B&B accommodation. Jimi Collis, Sarah's son, was giving them a tour of the farm which he loves to do with guests when John caught up with them. Some of the issues that arose from the subsequent interview will be familiar to farmers around here but it seems that they do not have the same support for farm diversification and there is not the same attachment to the rural life amongst the Japanese as there is in the UK and Emi and Toshi are setting out on a campaign to convert the urban Japanese to the benefits and pleasures of spending time in the countryside. "Do Nothing, Natural Farming" "The One Straw Revolution" is a book written in 1975 by Masanobu Fukuoka, a Japanese farmer and philosopher, now acknowledged as a major influence on permaculture. He writes about his philosophy and the Four Principles of Natural Farming: no cultivation, no chemical fertilizer or prepare compost, no weeding by tillage and herbicides, and no dependence on chemicals. He called it "do-nothing, natural farming". Even though his methods require less labor, it can result in higher yields for your farm or garden. This short film is narrated by the book's editor Larry Korn. In 1973, he was under the tutelage of Mr. Fukuoka, who lived in Shikoku Island, Japan. Following the March 11, 2011 Great Tohuku Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan , thousands of people around the world gave toward relief efforts through GlobalGiving. GlobalGiving's local partner, Civic Force, distributed funds to local fishermen in Kesennuma. Makoto Hatakeyama received money for ropes and supplies to rebuild rafts. He was one of the first to start oyster farming in his area. This is his story.

We will build an international online community of people interested in sustainable agriculture and energy and in the future of Japan, through regular video updates and ongoing dialogue around the issues raised in the film. In the end we will have a film intended for international broadcast and distribution, and around the film we will have generated a wealth of new friends, knowledge and media to address these questions in our own communities.
