One year ago, a devastating 9.0 earthquake hit Japan, triggering a tsunami that surged the North Eastern coast and decimated entire towns. Thanks to our supporters, WSPA's team was on the ground within days of the disaster to help hundreds of animals in need. Working with our local partner, the Japan Animal Welfare Society (JAWS), as part of the larger Animal Disaster Response Team (ADRT), we provided much-needed shelter and aid to more than 800 pets affected by the disaster. Ueno Zoological Gardens is the oldest zoo in Japan. Founded in 1882, it has grown over the years, expanded its area to 14.3 ha (35.2 acres) and been the flagship of the Japanese zoo world. Now it's home to over 2600 animals from 464 different species and provides visitors with learning experience about the diversity of animals as well as fun and enjoyment.

Last Chance for Animals saved 366 animals from the disaster areas and nuclear evacuation zone in Japan. This is the story of just one of them. Chuppy was found alone and extremely traumatized and would not let anyone approach her in a devastated area about 25km south of the Fukushima Daichi nuclear plant. Following the unprecedented earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the humanitarian rescue and recovery effort has been unprecedented. But, while the vast majority of non-profits in Japan are focused solely on human concerns, thousands of lonely, frightened, and injured animals have been left out of the equation. They have been left to starve, die from wounds they received during the tsunami, or perish from radiation exposure. Los Angeles based Last Chance for Animals has been responsible for the vast majority of animal rescues, penetrating as deep as Okuma, Tomioka, and Naraha, at times coming within 5 kilometers of the damaged reactors.

Fukushima Will Happen In United States!? theintelhub.com While many radioactive cattle have been discovered large distances from Fukushima, what is more important is where their feed is coming from. "It's not only about the radioactive cattle in Fukushima Prefecture; its also about the radioactive straw the cattle eat that was grown elsewhere". Straw found 45 miles from Fukushima is highly contaminated with radioactive cesium, which is an indication that radiation has contaminated large portions of Northern Japan. More than half a million disintegrations per second in a kilogram of straw are comparable to Chernobyl levels. This proves that the American Nuclear Regulatory Commission was correct when it told Americans to evacuate beyond 50 miles and that the Japanese should have done the same. An Ex-Secretariat of Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission blames this contamination on "Black Rain".
