| | Japanese Phallic Festival - Bonden Matsuri Duration : 688 Seconds therovingroninreport.blogspot.com At first glance, Yokote's Bondon Matsuri in Northern Japan may seem rather innocuous. Tall decorative pools are paraded through the streets where later they are taken up a mountain and offered to a Shrine for the sake of a good harvest. However, if one probes a little deeper they will discover that the 4-meter tall Bonden poles are suppose to represent the penis and only men can participate in carrying it up the mountain. When the Bondon poles are brought to the shrine on the mountain, the whole phallic symbolism becomes very clear. Men lower their Bonden poles to a horizontal position before vigorously "entering" through the Torii gate and later the main shrine building. Other particpants form a defensive league to protect the shrine's virtue and when the Bonden carriers try to ram their poles through the opening, the defenders push back. Eventually the shrine's defenses are beaten and it gradually submits. Sometimes the poles bend and break which made me wince just watching. I think I mispronounced the name of the festival about half-a-dozen times thru-out the vid! The Bonden Matsuri takes place Feb 16th-17th with the 17th being the day of innuendo activity. | | Nude Festival - Japan Duration : 628 Seconds Improved quality version now uploaded: www.youtube.com February 2006 For most of the year, Kounoniya is a peaceful place. But in winter, religious ritual joins with drunken delirium to create one of Japan's most extraordinary sights -- the Nude Festival. In temperatures close to zero, a designated 'Spirit Man' is stripped and beaten by the crowd. The ritual, which dates back over a thousand years, is meant to absorb the city's punishment and brings good luck. As one participant admits: "It's more important than my wife." | | Nebuta Matsuri 2010 - Giants Floats at Japanese festival Duration : 479 Seconds therovingroninreport.blogspot.com Nebuta Matsuri is one the three biggest festivals in Tohoku, the northern region of Japan. In Aomori City they built giant floats of bamboo and washi (harden Japanese paper) which depicts scenes of Japanese and Chinese history and legends. It's one of my favorite festivals and this was my fourth time to see it. This was the last day of my five-day festival journey through Aomori Prefecture last summer. I had to split early unfortunately to catch a night bus - which I missed and ended up sleeping on a bench and taking the shinkansen back. Inside they have a small grill for keeping warm and for cooking mochi, chewy rice cake, and for heating up amezaki a type of sweet sake with almost no alcohol. Also inside is a small altar dedicated to Suijin-sama the god of water. In ages past, Yokote had a drinking water shortage so the festival was created to get Suijin-sama's attention.
