| The Kromanti Language of the Jamaican Maroons (Final edit) Duration : 775 Seconds This video documents the disappearing languages of the Eastern Maroons of Moore Town, Jamaica. The languages are (i) Kromanti, a language variety related to the Akan language cluster of West Africa, and (ii) Uol Taim Patwa or 'Maroon Spirit Language', a very archaic form of English-lexicon Creole, similar in many ways to the Creole languages of Suriname. The language is presented through Mr Isaac Bernard, one the last culture bearers of the community, with a good command of these languages. | | Silencing of the Tongues: Arawak/Lokono (Final Edit) Duration : 520 Seconds The video pursues the last remaining speakers of the Lokono language, otherwise known as Arawak, in Guyana. I does so on the Essequibo Coast in the area of Mainstay/Tapakuma and Wakapoa on the Pomeroon River. Of the 20000 ethnic Arawaks in Guyana, only a diminishing number of people over 60 years of age can speak the language. This is a dying language. The song speaks about the Cassidy-JLU system for writing Jamaican Creole and touches on issues of national identity via language.
