Jamaica - Pirate Sin City : Documentary
Duration : 2616 Seconds

In the late seventeenth century it was known as "the wickedest city on earth." A haven for adventurers, sailors and pirates--including the infamous Captain Morgan--Port Royal, Jamaica was the second largest port in the New World. But on June 7, 1692, an earthquake and tidal wave shook the city of 8000 residents, and the delicate spit of land on which it was built sank beneath the Caribbean. But the natural disaster that spelled an end to Port Royal was a godsend for modern archaeologists. SIN CITY JAMAICA explores the history and fate of the notorious port, then slips beneath the waves for a look at the remains of the city. Hear from world-famous marine archeologist Bob Marx, who has been diving on the sunken city since 1965. Donnie Hamilton, who conducted key expeditions in the mid-1980s, explains how recovered artifacts are used to help reconstruct what life was like in Port Royal during its heyday. And get an up-close look at the ongoing search to find the remains of the Ranger, Black Bart's ship.

Race to preserve the world's oldest submerged town - Part 2
Duration : 492 Seconds

Underwater archaeologists surveying the worlds oldest submerged town have found ceramics dating back to the early Bronze Age. This suggests that Pavlopetri, off the southern Laconia coast of Greece, was occupied some 5000 years ago making the site even more important than first thought. The Pavlopetri Underwater Archaeology Project, involving the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and The University of Nottingham, aims to establish when the site was occupied, what it was used for and through a systematic study of the geomorphology of the area, how the town became submerged. Dr Jon Henderson, from the Department of Archaeology, takes up the story.

Red and Black in Haiti - Book Launch Matthew J. Smith, Ph.D. part 1
Duration : 1388 Seconds

In 1934, the Republic of Haiti celebrated its 130th anniversary as an independent nation. That same year, another sort of Haitian independence occurred, as the United States ended nearly two decades of occupation. In the first comprehensive political history of post-occupation Haiti, historian Matthew Smith argues that the period from 1934 until the rise of dictator François Papa Doc Duvalier in 1957 constituted modern Haitis greatest moment of political promise. He will explore this theme in a lecture based on his recently published book titled Red and Black in Haiti: Radicalism, Conflict, and Political Change, 1934-1957. The lecture is sponsored by Florida International Universitys Latin American and Caribbean Center, School of International and Public Affairs, and Digital Library of the Caribbean, as well as the Haitian Heritage Museum. The event is part of LACCs 12th Annual Haitian Summer Institute. Matthew J. Smith, Ph.D. Lecturer in History in the Department of History and Archaeology, at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica Haitian Heritage Museum, Miami, FL July 2, 2009
