Sixteen low-lying, single-seater Formula 3 cars race around the corners of Israel's brand new racetrack in Eilat. It's Israel's first and only professional race car driving track. The multi-million dollar project took years to complete and overcame a major obstacle by making racing legal in the country. The law was changed earlier this year, and Israeli fans at the track are overjoyed. They came wearing "Formula Israel" gear, filming the race and eating Hanukkah doughnuts. The platform overlooking the track was virtually built on the coast of the Red Sea, and past the track, spectators can see the mountains of Jordan and the Port of Aqaba. The track is 1.5 kilometers long and relatively small, but it has the advantage of year-round good weather. Many are hoping that will attract international drivers. Israel doesn't have a long list of Formula race car drivers because it's extremely expensive, and local corporate sponsors have not funded teams here as they have in other countries. But now, Israeli drivers have a place to practice and compete.

As Israel celebrates its 64th birthday, the festivities are on their way on "Yom Haatzmaut," the Israeli Independence Day. While some of the official events take place in Israel's capital Jerusalem, municipalities all across the nation have put together street performances and concerts, traditional ceremonies, along with songs, fireworks and a lot of spirit. We spoke to Israelis who shared with us some of their Independence Day plans. Israel's Independence Day is a significant day for most Israelis, seeing as they view their state as still fairly young and not taken for granted. The Israeli streets around me display a great deal of cheer and patriotism on this day, with Israeli flags decorating most cars and balconies, and many families are celebrating with picnics and barbecues around the country. DVD players and Game Boys are so five years ago, but a new concept in rear seat entertainment technology that uses the windows themselves could replace squirminess and snoozing with interactive scribbling, sweeping and pinching. General Motors Research and Development put that challenge before researchers and students from the FUTURE LAB at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel. The task: Conceptualize new ways to help rear seat passengers, particularly children, have a richer experience on the road. The Windows of Opportunity (WOO) Project was inspired by psychological studies indicating car passengers often feel disconnected from their environment, GM asked the Bezalel students to turn car windows into interactive displays capable of stimulating awareness, nurturing curiosity and encouraging a stronger connection with the world outside the vehicle. "Traditionally, the use of interactive displays in cars has been limited to the driver and front passenger, but we see an opportunity to provide a technology interface designed specifically for rear seat passengers," said Tom Seder, GM R&D lab group manager for human-machine interface. "Advanced windows that are capable of responding to vehicle speed and location could augment real world views with interactive enhancements to provide entertainment and educational value." The attacks, which have killed five Iranian nuclear scientists since 2007 and may have destroyed a missile research and development site, have been carried out in dramatic fashion, with motorcycle-borne assailants often attaching small magnetic bombs to the exterior of the victims' cars. US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Obama administration is aware of the assassination campaign but has no direct involvement.

After holding Gaza under siege for more than three years, Israel has said it will finally allow new cars and spare parts into the strip. Residents were relieved, because they have had to buy damaged cars and parts from tunnel smugglers. But a month after the announcement, nothing has arrived because of a dispute between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Some car dealers are also angry because they could be stuck with over-priced inventory brought to Gaza through smuggling which they will not be able to sell. Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports from Gaza.
