After two years of preparation and strong support from Italy, the first Israel Fashion Week in thirty years came to Neve Tzedek, a fashionable neighborhood in Tel Aviv. For three days, media, models, and designers highlighted Israeli and Italian fashion. Roberto Cavalli, the leading Italian designer, headlined the show and featured his spring 2012 collection. He was accompanied by his wife Eva and an Italian military escort. The close cooperation with Italy was not only due to Italy's influence on the fashion industry, but also because Milan is the sister city of Tel Aviv. Israeli designers are hoping this year's Israel Fashion Week will gain recognition for their brands outside Israel, and officials are already planning another event in April 2012.

Our correspondents bring you the story. Israel Fashion week's debut evening was crowded with guests from all corners of Israel, keen to meet fashion designers and trend forecasters from around the world. The city of Holon hosts the event for the third year in a row, though it is the first time that guests will have the opportunity to see some of the globe's leading fashion gurus. One of them is Mr. Emran Emad, a leading fashion trend forecaster and financial advisor from the USA Mr. Emad tells us about the meaning of traditional fashion as opposed to modern age digital fashion design. [Mr. Emran Emad, Fashion Trend Forecaster]: "This tradition was passed down from generation to generation to generation, so just because we have technology it does not mean we should lose it. You know we should keep that too.I think it's important that we preserve the way of doing things the old way because machines cannot make clothes like people can." The event was initiated and financially supported by The Municipality of Holon. The mayor explains to us why it was important to make the event extend over the whole week. A fashion show initiated by Iddo Gruengard, Ronny Winner and Talya Galed, 3 young disabled Israelis. The fashion show included 15 disabled models with different disabilities and 15 proffessional models (Look Agency). The designs were by 15 top Israeli fashion designers, and produced by Raviv Ben Yaakov and Talya Sanderss, directed by Smadar Ganzi. The fashion show was covered by the media and was a great success in defining disability in a more positive way in society.

The Jaffa flea market is one of the oldest bazaars in the world. Whereas it used to be a place to find knick-knacks and second-hand furniture or clothing, today it is also rapidly becoming one of the trendiest spots in Israel. Fashion designers, artists, antique dealers and gourmet chefs have all converged upon the portside area just south of Tel Aviv, making it a destination for bargain hunters and fashionistas from Israel and abroad, and even a newly desirable place to live. "It's not exactly Soho in NY or Camden in London," says Ava Rodan of Alma Jewelry. "It's an original place where you can find really old antiques or new shops with a lovely atmosphere."
