| | Irish Language Duration : 336 Seconds Most people around the world tend to believe that, when someone says Irish (the language), is talking about an accent in English. In fact its usual to think that everybody in Ireland talks in English. But thats not true. There is a whole language, on a completely different branch of the European language family tree, distant from French and Spanish, stranger than Slavic languages and more exotic and beautiful than many languages: Im talking about the Irish Language, the Gaelic. Original from Ireland and historically spoken by the Irish people, Irish is now spoken as a first language only by a small minority of the Irish population but is also used as a second language by a larger and expanding minority. It also plays an important symbolic role in the life of the Irish state and is used across the country in a variety of media, personal contexts and social situations. It enjoys constitutional status as the National and first official language of the Republic of Ireland, and it is an official language of the European Union. Irish is also an officially recognized minority language in Northern Ireland. While Irish is quite different , there are some things that make it pretty interesting and easy to learn. For example, it only has 11 irregular verbs (compared to 500 or so in English and thousands in Spanish or French, depending on how you count them), theres no indefinite article and even though it has masculine and feminine nouns, the definite article is the same for both ... | | Irish Language Co. Louth - Gaeilge An Lú Duration : 249 Seconds TRANSLATION: My father put me tending cattle one day, with cows, a two year old heifer and donkeys, back near the river. I stole a fishing rod that he had and back I went. I turned over a stone & got a worm. I put it on the fishing hook, into the hole with it and I cast a fine trout out onto the grass. A neighbour came to our house and she called by the door Is there anyone inside? Im here said my father, Whats wrong? he said. Your cows are in the oats and theyve destroyed the place. Ive send a boy to mind them but it would be possible that he fell asleep. A deep sleep! Hes down at the river catching trout with your rod. When I catch a hold of him, Ill break his neck. Then I turned around to go home. I saw my father coming towards me. When I catch a hold of you, Ill break your neck. I was afraid to come home. I sat under a basket that was in the field and after a while I saw my father coming out, smoking a pipe. Back along the road with him and I took courage and went home. I knew my mother wouldnt be at me. When I came I put the fishing rod standing outside the door, up by the eaves of the house. There was a hen going around with a dozen little birds with her, and she saw the worm on the line. She jumped up and grabbed the worm, the hook stuck in her jaw. Her tongue was out, hung there. The little ones were going around ... Tags :Irish, Language, Gaeilge, Co., Louth, An, Lú, Omeath, Meith, Ardachaidh
