| | Chronology, Culture & Archaeology: Tree-ring studies, Fergus Estuary, Co. Clare, Ireland Duration : 135 Seconds This short film introduces fieldwork done as part of a Marie Curie Fellowship in the summer of 2011. The first case study was chosen to examine issues surrounding short-ring sequences and maritime environments. A series of medieval fish weirs have been found along the Fergus Estuary Co. Claire, Ireland, currently dated by radiocarbon methods to sometime between around 1250 AD and 1450 AD. These extraordinary structures are amongst some of the best preserved and most extensive fishing structures surviving in North Western Europe and are actively being exposed by the westward migration of the main Fergus Estuary channel. This Marie Curie Fellowship study forms part of a wider study of the estuary headed by Dr Aidan O'Sullivan and entitled Fergus estuary and islands: discovering a maritime historic landscape in Co. Clare. Fieldwork in this environment is a challenge, on a good low tide the structures are only uncovered for about 2 to 2.5 hours and can only be accessed after a 40 minute boat journey. This gives about 3 to 4 good days a month during which fieldwork can be undertaken. During the summer of 2011 a series of fieldwork trips were undertaken and in excess of 550 samples have been taken from two of the largest traps, these are currently being processed for ring counts, ring measurements and wood species analysis. In addition a pilot sub set of the samples are being examine to established whether or not it is possible to observe time related variation in the chemical ...
