From The Late Late Show 2nd September 2011 The vast majority of schools in Ireland are State funded but Catholic run. This is nowhere more obvious than in the primary school sector. Parents who do not wish their children to receive religious instruction find it very difficult to locate a school where their children will not be subject to Catholic indoctrination. If they are extremely lucky, they will find a multi-denominational school nearby. For most, however, the only schools within their area will be Catholic schools. As the experiences recounted here illustrate, even when an agreement is reached with a school to accommodate parents desire for a religiously neutral education for their children, in reality our national schools continue to indoctrinate Catholicism, with the assistance of State funds. The question here is whether the State should continue to support a school system that is organised around one religious ethos, or to separate religious and academic education entirely. Religious indoctrination should be optional, not inevitable.

This series of BBC Newsline clips document the huge division which exists between protestants and catholics in Northern Ireland - all because of IRA violence. In Northern Ireland protestants and catholics are born in different hospitals, attend segregated schools, attend separate churches and live in religiously divided estates and towns. Before the IRA began it's anti-protestant terrorist campaign in 1969 protestants and catholics lived peacefully together in mixed areas - and worked together in major employers in Northern Ireland. The IRA sought to change this during their campaign and murdered catholics who worked, associated or started relationships with protestants. They also forced tens of thousands of protestants from their homes in predominently catholic areas. This BBC documentary shows that these IRA-created divisions still exist in Northern Ireland today - and will take generations to fix.

Who was he really, this hobo, world traveller and finally famous Buddhist in the Orient who blazed a trail but died, it seems, ignored by history? The enigmatic, free thinking Dubliner who used different aliases, we now know to have been Dhammaloka, "the Irish Buddhist" who converted to his adopted religion around 1900. He became widely known throughout Asia and in the process, managed to fall foul of the colonial establishment as well as Christian missionaries. Uncovering Dhammaloka's unique story has taken some inspired detective work on the part of UCC's Professor Brian Bocking, as well as other colleagues, and their efforts have not been in vain. The lost Irish Buddhist emerges after all these years as one of the earliest Western Buddhist monks, pre-dating many others who have claimed the title. Professor Bocking takes us through an amazing odyssey.

Hundreds of Irish women were incarcerated in Irish Magdalene laundries run by religious orders in the past. For many of them, their experiences in these places were horrendous. On Sunday 12th July, Maureen O'Sullivan and "Sharon" talked to Irish broadcaster and journalist Karen Coleman about their experiences in Irish Magdalene laundries. They were speaking to Karen on her show "The Wide Angle" on Newstalk106-108.

August 2009 Kilometres of graffiti-daubed concrete walls snake through Belfast. They divide Catholic neighbourhoods from Protestant. But do these Peace Walls keep the hatred and suspicion locked outside or inside? The consensus among the locals is clear if the walls came down there would be a return to intractable sectarian violence. If you pull that wall down therell be murder, mayhem, therell be blood spilt, says a loyalist resident. The recent killings of two soldiers, a policeman and a Catholic community worker, indicate that trouble is still very close to the surface. Theres walls of prejudice; walls that were built here 300 years ago and they're still here in legislation, in prejudice and bigotry', tells Republican Sean McVeigh. 'So those are the walls that are going to have to come down first. Are the Peace Walls monuments to the past or vital and necessary peacekeepers in the present? Almost fifteen years after the IRA's military surrender, the scars of their religiously-motivated terrorist campaign can still be felt in Northern ireland. Before the IRA's campaign, protestants and catholics lived side-by-side in mixed areas and socialised together. Once the IRA began murdering protestants because of their religion, the communities split and many parts of the country were turned into religious ghettos. In 2012 the scars of IRA anti-protestant terrorism are still raw across Northern ireland.
