This film came out of the directors frustration with watching the nightly news and hearing generals, politicians and pundits, explaining the political and economic cost of the war in the Middle East, without ever mentioning the human cost. He wanted to hear about the war by the people affected by it most: doctors, nurses, poets, artists, soldiers, and his personal favorite, musicians. Michael Franti, world-renowned musician and human rights worker, travels to Iraq, Palestine and Israel to explore the human cost of war with a group of friends, some video cameras and his guitar. A compelling soundtrack, visual and musical montages and Frantis intimate voiceovers make the film speak to the MTV, X, Y & Z generations, as well as the baby-boomers. A true armchair travel film pulling the audience into these war zones in the company of Michaels guitar, eloquence and wit you feel the humanity, artistic resilience and sometimes horrific experience of what its like to live under the bombs and military occupation. George Bush Dodges Shoes on Farewell Iraq Visit : December 14, 2008 President Bush's fourth and final visit to Baghdad may not have been quite the fond farewell he had in mind. Amid official visits with Iraqi leaders, the president wound up having to dodge a pair of shoes thrown by a screaming Iraqi journalist. The surprise trip, Bush's first to Iraq since September 2007, was intended to celebrate a security pact between the US and the Iraqi government. Bush's schedule included talks with Iraqi leaders, US troops and officials stationed in Iraq. But at a joint news conference held with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a man identified as Muntadhar al-Zaiydi, a local television correspondent, threw a shoe at Bush and yelled, "This is a farewell kiss, dog!" and, "This is the end!" The shoe sailed right past the president's head and the thrower was grabbed and dragged out of the room screaming. Bush joked about it, saying, "That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want you to know." The man's screams were still audible after he had been taken to a separate room. Displaying the soles of one's shoes is considered a deep insult in much of the Arab world. Despite the dramatically improved security in Iraq, every effort was made to keep the presidents travel plans quiet. Reporters invited to make the trip were not told about it until Friday and were allowed to tell only one superior and a spouse. Everything went smoothly. Mom was focused, her nurse was encouraging and dad was cheering them both on from a Marine base in Iraq. When Sergeant Wilterdink shipped out to Iraq in January 2009 from Camp Pendleton, he knew he and his wife were expecting their first child. Rather than go it alone in California, Shannon moved back to Omaha to be with her family hoping that her husband could be there too. Even if he couldnt be there in person, she wanted him to still be a part of the event, so she contacted the Freedom Calls Foundation - which operates call centers at seven military camps in Iraq and Kuwait and conducts some 2000 video teleconferences a month. They reached out to Alegent Health and began the technical conversation on how to connect Bergan Mercy Medical Center with Iraq. "It was bugging me that I was going to miss this. Images of Iraq taken between 1900 and 1958. Some are from my private collection, others were taken by Sir Wilfred Thesiger, a distinguished explorer and travel writer. Some of Thesigers photographs appeared in his famous books of travel writing, Arabian Sands (1959) and The Marsh Arabs (1964), and more recently through books dedicated to his photography alone, such as Visions of a Nomad (1987) Munir bashir was born in Mosul (Iraq) in 1930 into a long established family of musicians. He began to learn the oud at the age of five, along with the cello. He studied oud in Baghdad under the great masters and then moved to Hungary, where he gained his doctorate.
