"Never Went to the Palace" - an Iraq War travel song
Duration : 209 Seconds

I wrote this song when I served in Iraq 2004-2005. It was inspired by a young soldier I met who complained he went everywhere in Iraq except for Saddam's palace in Baghdad. The palace was in the "Green Zone," and the surrounding area had a lot of amenities, including a decent chow hall, swimming pools, weight rooms, salsa lessons, and a relatively-high female-to-male ratio. In any case, it was a light-hearted moment in an otherwise highly-stressful environment. I don't know where that soldier is now, but this goes out to him and all our other brothers and sisters serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sorry for the singing and guitar playing, but I hope you enjoy the song. --Patrick S. Lyrics to "Never Went to the Palace" by Patrick S. [first verse] Went out of the States and into Kuwait And over the border to set things in order Ate a lot of dust and drank a lot of water But oh, I never went to the Palace Went up to Diwaniyah, dang it's good to see ya' Basrah, Fallujah; can I get a boo-yah! Mosul and Najaf, yeah we had a good laugh But oh, I never went to the Palace [chorus] I went up to Kirkuk and west to Tikrit Down to Ramadi ain't got much to eat Got myself as close as Camp Victory But the very next day it was Baquba for me [second verse] Second tour later with my full battle rattle Wrangled to Balad like a herd of Texas cattle Now Kut's a callin' and the only thing appalling is... Man, I never went to the Palace Broke bread in Sulaymaniyah, my back in Nasiriyah Folks in Tal Afar said, "we don't wanna see ya'" So I head to Samarra, but that's just too far-a- ways from Palace [chorus] [repeat first verse] [chorus] [final verse] So if they try to tell ya' that the place ya' wanna be Is place called Jurf-a-Sakhr; well listen to me Look 'em in the eye and say with no malice Man, I wanna go to the Palace! ###

Forging the New Iraq - Iraq
Duration : 959 Seconds

May 2003 The collapse of Saddam's regime left Iraq teetering. We travel through the war ravaged south and find that a new political life is emerging alongside anti-American anger. Independent political parties are emerging for the first time in forty years. We see a Sunni politician campaigning on the streets of Nasiriyah, speaking to a bemused crowd. "We want an Iraq as one people, one nation without political, religious and ethnic divisions," says Sami Ul Ubaydi from the National Iraqi Rescue Movement. Everyone is worried the US wants to exclude them - concerned America will shoe-horn one of their own protégés into power instead. These suspicions increased when the Pentagon's favourite exile, Ahmed Chalabi, returned with US trained militia carrying new weapons and bundles of U$ Dollars. "We can't allow a big, hidden hand to choose the Government for us," states cleric Ryad Al Noori. Most Iraqis, however, have little time for politics: concerned more with the everyday struggle for water, electricity, medicine and food. Surrounded by the rubble of his bombed out home Sheik Al Zouhiri has paid a heavier price than most for his freedom, 14 of his family are dead. "No electricity, no fuel, no water. Why? This is a question for George Bush. Is this freedom?"

Not in My Name: The Human Shields - Iraq
Duration : 609 Seconds

See full film here: http://www.booserver.com/projects.php?ProjectID=1490 Aug 2003 An engaging documentary about the human shields who risked their lives remaining in Iraq after the war started. Convinced that their governments' actions were wrong, they braved bombs, looters and power cuts to try and protect the Iraqi people. Now American human shields face the prospect of up to twelve years in prison for their selfless actions. The room shakes as a bomb explodes nearby. A woman crouches on the floor, cradling her head in her hands. "Theyre bombing around us," her friend exclaims in disbelief. "They're bombing around us!" For the human shields still in Iraq this is the moment they've been waiting for. The moment they find out if they can actually make a difference and protect key Iraqi sites. The human shields movement began months earlier when three double-decker buses set off from London to travel to Baghdad. "We will be where we think they're going to drop bombs" stated one anti-war protestor. "If you kill Iraqi people, you kill us too!" Although the majority of people applaud their decision, not everyone is supportive. "You're a disgrace to this country, every one of you!" shouts one bystander. "Piss off and don't come back!" As they prepare to depart, organiser Ken Nichols O'Keefe warns everyone to be wary of the media, describing them as "snakes who will stab us in the back as soon as they get a chance." His fears are proved right when an English journalist joins them for one stage of the journey only to produce a damning report accusing them of infighting and claiming they stopped off to go siteseeing in Rome. Unperturbed they press on. As they travel through Turkey, the protesters are shocked to find themselves flagged down by police cars. They are ordered to accompany the police to the Iraqi Embassy and meet with Iraqi officials. This does not go down well with some of them. "We're not friends of the Iraqi government, we're friends of the Iraqi people," complains one. A few days later they reach their final destination: Baghdad. After over a decade of sanctions, evidence of their impact is everywhere. Factories struggle without spare parts, hospital store cupboards are bare and the water purification plant, damaged during the last war, is unable to provide clean water for everyone.

Home Sweet Home - Iraq
Duration : 596 Seconds

July 2005 An Iraqi by birth, Hassan returns from his home in Sidney to his native land. The last time he did so was years ago with his family on holiday to visit relatives. This time it is to be no holiday. He has been summoned by Iraq's new post-Saddam administration to assist in the reconstruction of his homeland, but it is a land whose people are wracked with unemployment and afflicted with many other social maladies. The ordinary people of Iraq are forced to live their lives amongst insurgents who threaten to maintain the unstable environment of the Iraq war. It has been Hassan's life-long dream to witness the state of Iraq democratic and freed from the tyranny of its former leader, but it seems that the new-found freedoms do not ensure Hassan's safety: linked to Iraq's new leadership, he knows he has become a vulnerable target for rebels still loyal to the old regime.
