Dec 2004 American forces are battling to maintain control over an increasingly hostile society. We spend a day on patrol with one platoon. Posted in the notoriously dangerous town of Ramada, the troops are well aware that their lives are in constant danger. And they are invoking more than the gods in their bid for help. But betrayal comes at a high price and most Iraqis are unwilling to succumb to American pressure.

March 2002 Kurdistan is blossoming - but it depends on protection from the US and UK. The new found security is fragile, and the second Gulf War could undermine everything. A deformed baby screams for its mother in the hospital in Halabja -- a living legacy of the long term effects of Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction. Today, congenital abnormality rates are 4-5 times higher than post atomic populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 5000 Kurds were killed by chemical weapons in 1988, as Saddam bombed, burned and bulldozed in his attempts to exterminate the Kurds. Now they have rebuilt 80% of their villages, and Iraqi Kurdistan is undergoing a mini boom. Western style shopping malls are springing up, university students have 50 independent newspapers and internet access. "It really is a tremendous change. We have suffered a lot. We are very happy," comments one shopper. The Kurds see themselves as a model for a democratic Iraq. In 1992, they held elections, formed a parliament and have embraced the ballot box. "To see what we have achieved in a situation where we had no culture of democracy and civil institutions is a great success story," comments Salah Barham of the Kurdish regional government. But the society they have built is incredibly fragile. Saddam has 200.000 troops stationed only 30km away and security depends on the US and UK maintaining no fly zones. But for others, it can bring isolation, cruelty and even death. The Kurds have been in conflict with their three powerful neighbours - Iran, Turkey and Iraq - for the last 80 years. Thousands of villages were destroyed and families forced into crowded collective towns and refugee camps. This has changed the very fabric of Kurdish society, unleashing a chain of violence - often against women. NOTE: WHY DO I USE THE WORD "CRUSADE"? In the two years since I posted this series I have received messages from many Christians stating that they are offended by the word "crusade" (a derivation of "cross") being associated with Islamic violence. I chose to use that word because The Crusades are something that most in the post-modern, politically correct West recognize as "evil." Many westerners are still not acquainted with the real meaning of words like "jihad," "shariah," "dhimmis", etc. Hopefully in 2010 more people DO understand the true meaning of those words. In short, I chose the word "crusades" to highlight that Christians were not the only ones who fought religious wars of conquest. My intention was not to insult Christianity. Christianity is a religion of peace that is sometimes used by extremists to justify violence. Islam is a religion of war. I pray for the day when these videos are no longer needed.
