Residents of the land-locked West Bank have long been dependent on expensive Mediterranean fish supplied to them by Israel. Today, fish farming can provide an alternative. In the city of Jericho, farmer Omar Sawafta is one of many who have opted to fish farming in tanks and pools in a bid to make the West Bank self-sufficient in "sea" food. Abdel Aziz Maali, a supervisor at a local fish farm, says the climate in the area is ideal for the fish farming, adding that the ministry of agriculture, having realized this, helped build the farm. Despite the availability of water for the fish, there is increased competition for the precious commodity from nearby Jewish settlements, which is having a dramatic impact on Jericho's main industry, farming. Ismail Daik, of the Palestinian Farmer's Union, says the ministry of agriculture suggests farmers recycle the waste water from the fish farm and use it for plant irrigation. Jericho is the world's lowest lying city, at 300 meters below sea level. It relies predominantly on subterranean wells and natural springs. Sharing water resources is a sensitive issue in Israel's ties with the Palestinians along with other Arab neighbors. According to a report by Amnesty International last year, it has blamed Israel of prohibiting Palestinians' from accessing water, a claim that relates to Palestinians saying the route of water shortage lies in deep Israeli wells. (BALAD, Iraq) - Iraq may invoke images of desert terrain and that is the case in certain areas, but around Balad, agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy.Sgt Jonathan Fondow with the US Army's 101st Airborne, says it is very good land, "Compared to if you go north or south of here, this is probably the best farming area that I have seen."On this day, members of the 101st Airborne visited a local sheik who oversees the area's produce stores that sell these ag products that in turn feed many of the local people here. From the san jose mercury news The Occupy protest Monday erased millions of dollars in economic activity linked to the besieged Port of Oakland and harmed middle-cl `ass truck drivers, port officials and truckers said Tuesday. "For the day, it was a loss of $4 million to $8 million, easily," said Isaac Kos-Read, director of external affairs for the Port of Oakland. "The ripple effects are much greater than that." The Oakland port, which was hit by a similarly costly Occupy protest in November, generates about $8.5 million a day in economic activity, he said. Yet the economic impact extends well beyond the port facilities. Imports from Asia, along with exports from places such as the Central Valley's farming hubs, are also affected by port shutdowns or disruptions. "The port activities support wages that are paid, taxes that are paid, business revenue that is collected," Kos-Read said. Demonstrations by the Occupy movement at the entrances to the Oakland commerce hub disrupted the operations of six out of seven terminals Monday, idled longshoremen and other dock workers, and forced truck drivers to delay deliveries and pickups.
