| | Iraq War Vet With New Military Collaborated Prosthetic Knee Duration : 139 Seconds A KSTP news broadcast of a Iraq war vet trying out his new Ottobock Genium X2 Prosthetic Knee for the first time with a check socket at our facility in Maplewood. The X2 technology is the result of collaboration between the US military and Plymouth, Minnesota-based Ottobock, the world's largest prosthetic and orthotic manufacturer. The goal was to develop a more robust, durable, and intuitive prosthetic leg to help injured service members with above knee amputations return to normal activities of daily living, as well as active duty if they desired. Setting the X2 apart is its microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee joint that utilizes a complex sensory system and sophisticated rule sets that offer a gait closer to natural human motion and which greatly reduces the differences between the body's natural abilities and artificial replacements. The X2's multiple environmental inputs include: *An accelerometer to measure changing speed and direction of movement and a gyroscope that is able to intelligently and intuitively tell where the user's leg is in space. These are the same technologies used in Wii™ gaming systems to react to the player's movements and the same used in phones and cameras that adjust the image on those screens when the devices change position. The result is expanded physical movement with greater security, as well as: *Added versatility and functionality for the real world such as running, and walking backwards, *Crossing obstacles in a more ... | | Kurdistan eyes role as gateway to Iraq Duration : 311 Seconds Erbil, northern Iraq (CNN) - In the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, Erbil Citadel is thought to be the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the world. More than 7000 years old, it is a reminder of a timeless past in a fast-changing present. Beneath it, the city of Erbil is undergoing rapid development, with five-star hotels and luxury housing complexes joining its skyline. | | Housing in Erbil Duration : 279 Seconds The housing options range from stand alone villas to gated high rise flat communities to standard row villa living. Costs for an acceptable 100m2 flat in the city proper start at around 600 USD a month and you can even find a low end villa for about 1200 USD per month. There are also properties for sale and many under construction which will soon be on the market. Expat gated/secured housing in high rise/stand-alone villas ranging from 2000 -- 3000 USD per month. Overall, deposits vary from 1 month to 1 year, but are negotiable in most cases. Also, these housing communities are full of offices as companies consolidate costs by living and working in the same space. Leasing is done through lawyers or real estate brokers. The lawyer/broker for each party will draft an original contract out of the two side's desires. Once the contract is agreeable to both, it is taken to the appropriate Ministries to be stamped. Once the agreement is signed and stamped, it cannot be changed by either party. There is a good chance that in the coming year or two there will be a housing glut. There are so many living accommodations being built that barring an enormous international immigration trend, the supply will far outweigh the demand for rentals. Temp living is limited to hotels; there are no adequate specialty temporary living accommodations that have been built to date. | | Hotel fire kills dozens in Northern Iraq Duration : 46 Seconds www.timesofearth.com BAGHDAD — At least 41 people, including several foreign nationals, have died in a hotel fire in the city of Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq, according to hospital sources. Another 23 people were injured in the fire on Thursday at the Soma Hotel in the central area of the city, the sources added. "Most of the people who were killed were choked because of the smoke. They could not get out," said Dr Reqot Hama-Rasheed, head of the health department in the city. Hospital sources said the victims included Americans, Koreans, Bangladeshis and other Arab nationals. Police quoted Brigadier-General Najim-al-Din Qadir as saying an electrical short caused the fire. Some of the victims died after jumping from the third floor to escape the flames, an official said. The fire raged out of control for several hours. A security official said the fire was not a terrorist act and the cause was under investigation. "This is not a terrorist act. Most probably it was due to an electrical fault," said Qader Hama-Jan, the head of local security operations. Sulaymaniyah is located 260km northeast of Baghdad and is the second largest city in Iraq's Kurdish autonomous region. Iraq's minority Kurds were oppressed by Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi former president, but have enjoyed virtual independence under Western protection since the end of the first Gulf War. As the rest of Iraq descended into sectarian warfare and a raging insurgency after the 2003 US-led invasion, Iraqi ... Tags :Iraq, hotel, fire, kills, dozens
