| | Cultural Heritage Project in Iraq - Part One Duration : 578 Seconds In April 2009, Dr. Brian Rose, Deputy Director of the Penn Museum was invited by the State Department to help coordinate cultural preservation efforts in Iraq. Along with a team of army specialists and other cultural experts, Dr. Rose visited several cultural heritage sites across the country that experienced significant damage during the recent wars. Among these sites was the ancient city of Ur, known as the cradle of civilization and the site of the biblical Garden of Eden. Here, we are guided through the Ziggurat of Ur built by Ur-Nammu in 2100 BCE. The site is also said to be the birthplace of the biblical Abraham although there is no archaeological evidence to support this claim. In 2000, Saddam Hussein built a modern "House of Abraham" out of cement in hopes that the Pope would visit on the Anniversary year of the Vatican. The Pope, however, did not come. Dr. Rose filmed Guide Dhaif Munsen as he revealed some of the facts about the site from its ancient past to recent attempts at renovation and interpretation. Dhaif Munsen's grandfather worked a the excavation site with Sir Leonard Woolley in 1922. The group also tours the site of the Great Death Pit at the Royal Cemetery of Ur dating from 2500BCE. The project allowed local residents to benefit again form their ground water resources and contributed in saving more than 800 families from displacement. | | Raiders of the Lost Ark - Iraq Duration : 1059 Seconds July 2003 The destruction and looting of Iraq's National museum became a symbol of America's failure to protect the country it had occupied. But now the museum is slowly being restored and many pieces recovered. Images of the empty museum provoked outrage that looters could so easily walk off with Iraq's heritage from under the Americans' noses. It was reported that as many as 170000 artefacts were stolen, a figure played down by American investigators. "We have found that was fortunately a gross and irresponsible exaggeration," explains Col Matthew Bogdonas. But many in the world community still maintain the Americans could have done more. "Are any of those people engaged in the fighting"' asks Col Matthew Bogdonas. "The Museum was a battleground." The Americans are running an amnesty programme, encouraging the return of looted relics and "little by little the wounds are healing." So far about 1000 have been returned. Both Iraq's cultural heritage and America's hearts and minds campaign depend on it. | | America at Risk: Kerry Kachejian on the Importance of Military Readiness Duration : 226 Seconds site.heritage.org | Rebuilding Iraq during the raging insurgency was no easy task. It required ingenuity, courage and innovative ways to get the job done—sometimes with equipment that offered little protection from the car bombs and rocket attacks launched by America's enemies. Kachejian told his harrowing story in a book called "SUVs Suck In Combat." It chronicles some of the war stories that Americans never heard about the readiness challenges facing our military. The Heritage Foundation chose to profile him as part of Protect America Month, which showcases why we must commit to protecting the United States in an increasingly dangerous world. | | DC FOX 5: White House Protestors Throw Shoes at Bush Effigy Duration : 147 Seconds WASHINGTON, DC - December 17th, 2008 - President Bush may have though he'd see the last of shoes being thrown his way, but the anti-war group Code Pink showed up at the White House Wednesday to stage a protest inspired by the President's much-discussed shoe ducking incident. The protesters took turns throwing shoes at a large puppet that was made up to look like President Bush. A shoe memorial was also laid out on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House to represent the Iraqi civilians who have been killed during the war. The group's founder, Medea Benjamin, says she views the Iraqi reporter who threw his footwear at the president as a role model, saying "We feel that the Iraq reporter is now a hero throughout the world because he has expressed the sentiment of millions of people who are so angry at George Bush's policies" Critics of Code Pink say the event was more publicity stunt than constructive discussion of the problems facing a post-Bush administration. Brian Darling of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, says Code Pink may have to change its style once Barack Obama inherits both the White House and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying "There is a mainstream left which respectfully discusses what's happened in Iraq and then there is Code Pink - no where near respectful - and their actions are out of the mainstream." The US Secret Service stood by during the protests; however there were no conflicts with authorities and no arrests were ...
