'The Fallen' - Images From the Iraq War
Duration : 242 Seconds

THE FALLEN (3rd Movement) - Composed by Mark O'Connor Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra Performer: Carla Auld (Flute) Conductor: Eric Jacobsen From Carla Auld's CD 'Beauty in America' Video Directed by Fiona Zwieb The Fallen "The Fallen" for flute solo and strings composed by Mark O'Connor in three movements was commissioned by two different flutists, and for each of their respective music festivals for the summer of 2003; Marya Martin for the 20th anniversary of her Bridghampton Festival in New York, and Beth Ross-Buckley at her Camadera Festival in San Diego. The compositional process for the piece began for O'Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their life in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O'Connor's usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement. By transforming the tragic and darker qualities of the first movement's themes, and making a departure from the quirky "feet on the ground" playfulness of the second movement, here O'Connor yearns and urges for a more beautiful world. In my Current Global Issues class. I was assigned to pick a Human Right that is being violated. I chose the right to clean drinking water in Iraq. The teacher who will remain nameless thought it was terrible and gave me a sub-par grade. My entire class enjoyed it very much and thinks I should enter it in some film festivals.

GESTURES
Duration : 75 Seconds

In the fall of 2002 the United States began a march toward war with Iraq. After rapid military success, it became painfully apparent there was no plan to secure the peace. A chronology of the Iraq war is told in Gestures. "Gestures chronicles US involvement in Iraq with short bits of text accompanied by appropriate hand gestures—thumbs up and down, an okay sign, the finger and so on; short and punchy, the piece artfully captures five years of misguided policy in two minutes." - LA Weekly. Gestures was produced on a Fisher-Price childrens video camera, manufactured in 1987, for the PXL THIS 16 Festival in Venice CA. The festival director, Gerry Fialka, has subsequently designated Gestures as one of 14 "Best of PXL This" videos selected from the hundreds of PXL2000 videos of the last 16 festivals. Thanks for that Gerry!!

Profile of Iranian Kurd Director Bahman Ghobadi
Duration : 1077 Seconds

Watch more at www.linktv.org In late May of 2007 Peter Scarlet, artistic director of the Tribeca Film Festival and our host and co-curator for CINEMONDO, traveled to the Kurdish-held area of Northern Iraq and shot an interview with Iranian Kurd filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi. Bahman Ghobadi first came to the movie world's attention in 2000, when his first feature film, "A Time for Drunken Horses," won the prize for best first feature at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was the first Kurdish language movie ever to gain worldwide attention. Since then Ghobadi has made three more features, all in the Kurdish language. His most recent, "Half Moon," is currently banned in Iran though it has been shown in festivals around the world. Link TV's 17-minute profile of Ghobadi provides a fascinating introduction to the work of a filmmaker who has riveted audiences around the world with his courageous and deeply affecting films about Kurdish life on the Iranian-Iraqi border.
