International women's day has been celebrated for over a century, and since then it has manifested itself in different ways in each and every culture. In some countries it has morphed into a sort of Valentine's Day. In others the day highlights points that the United Nations intended by creating the occasion. Light is shed on human rights, women's rights, and the ongoing struggles of women worldwide. In Iran woman's day means all that and a little more. Many husbands choose this day to show their appreciation for their wives, and the ongoing efforts to assert women's rights are highlighted. But the occasion has added significance in Iran, because of the people's Islamic faith, which emphasizes the holy status of women in society. That might be news for someone with little information about the Islamic faith, but Muslims have numerous laws designed specifically to assert women's rights, written in a time when baby girls were such a disgrace for their family, they were buried alive at birth. The role of women in any society is a subject of much controversy and debate. In Iran that debate is very much alive as well, with its own specific aspects. In this edition of the show we'll be talking about the Iranian women, and her role and status in the Iranian society. Protest at the Iranian embassy in Copenhagen triggered by the recent execution of five kurdish/iranian political prisoners in Iran. About 100 people attacked the embassy and police with stones, police spokesman Mads Firlings said. The police initially responded with pepper spray and then called in reinforcements, including police dogs, he said. Four demonstrators were arrested, and one officer was lightly wounded, he said. The demonstrations began peacefully but turned violent when a representative of the Iranian Embassy "provoked the demonstrators" with "very bad words in Persian," said Hilsen Mahmoud, the demonstration organizer and a member of the group Free Iran Society. The stand out film of the 2011 Berlin Film Festival and winner of the Golden Bear, A Separation is a suspenseful and intelligent drama detailing the fractures and tensions at the heart of Iranian society. When his wife (Leila Hatami) leaves him, Nader (Peyman Moadi) hires a young woman (Sareh Bayat) to take care of his suffering father (Ali-Asghar Shahbazi). But he doesn't know his new maid is not only pregnant, but also working without her unstable husband's (Shahab Hosseini) permission. Soon, Nader finds himself entangled in a web of lies manipulation and public confrontations. A Separation is the first ever Iranian film to be awarded the Golden Bear. A Separation will be released in the UK on 1 July 2011
