On Monday The US Senate unanimously approved a package of new economic sanctions on Iran's oil sector just days ahead of a meeting in Baghdad between major world powers and Tehran. The House of Representatives passed its version of the bill in December and now the Senate and House must work out their differences in the legislation. The West suspects Iran is working to build a nuclear bomb and the sanctions are meant to strip Tehran of revenue by shutting down financial deals with Iran's powerful state oil and tanker enterprises. Iran has said its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. In a statement from Republican Senator Mark Kirk, a co-author of the bill, he states that the Senate put Iranian leaders on notice that they must halt all uranium enrichment activities or face another round of economic sanctions from the United States.

presstv.ir The Persian Gulf is surrounded by 8 countries. It's the third largest gulf in the world, and geopolitically is of paramount importance. 68 percent of the world's known resources of gas and oil come from this region. And it's through the Hormuz Strait, a chokepoint 21 miles wide, that all goods oil and gas going to and from the Gulf must pass through. It's the only exit point into the open ocean, and at least one ocean-liner passes through every ten minutes. Iran flanks the whole northern coast of the Persian Gulf. That means it has jurisdiction over a large part of it, and therefore must play a major role in guaranteeing the region's security. In this edition of the show we will be looking into how the Strait of Hormuz plays into the politics of today.

Governments across the globe have tried to manipulate the movie business by supporting and censoring it when they see fit. And in response the world of cinema has tried to push back by deliberately overstepping the lines. Political cinema depicts the challenges, and struggles of the people, and the dynamics of the powers that rule over them. 2011 has been a big year for political cinema inside Iran. Films like The Outcasts 3 and Thesis are good examples. The Outcasts trilogy raked in millions of dollars. But the third was the most controversial and in-your-face political. It focused on one of the biggest political events after the Islamic revolution, the 2009 presidential elections. Cinema in Iran has gone through various stages in the past 32 years since the country became an Islamic republic. And yes politics has had an effect on it. In this edition of the show we will be talking about the history of political cinema inside Iran, and where it is today.

Despite the US's declared withdrawal of its military personnel and contractors out of Iraq, Washington has prepared to control the country's rich oil reserves in any case, shared Ranjit Singh Kalha, former India's ambassador to Iraq in the 1990s. Having spent $3 trillion in Iraq, a country with harsh weather conditions (+50 C most of the time) and absolutely nothing valuable but oil reserves, the Americans simply cannot give up the plentiful and very high quality oil they went there for. "It takes $1.50 to take out this oil that's just below the surface. Anybody who has access to this oil can be a game changer -- as far as the politics of oil is concerned," Ranjit Singh Kalha concluded. The problem Americans encountered in Iraq is that once given "some symbols" of democracy, the Iraqi voted for a Shia-led government. The headache is that the Shia traditionally have close links with Iran, the core territory of this affiliation. "That is the present dilemma. If you withdraw from Iraq completely, you leave this vast oil wealth of Iraq in the hands of Shia (Iran-oriented) government. And therefore it upsets the political balance in the Middle East," Ranjit Singh Kalha explained. He said that to counter such adverse developments the US will have almost 20000-strong embassy in Baghdad (the largest US embassy in the world) and consulates in Basra, Kerkuk and in northern Kurd-inhabited territory, each consulate 1000-strong. While the Arab Spring has brought winds of positive change, the destiny of the whole region now hangs on the issue of Palestine, insists politician Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian MP and the president of the Palestinian National Initiative. Currently, the Palestinian bid for statehood is deadlocked with the US obstructing a UN Security Council vote on the issue. America's pressure appears to be bearing fruit -- on the other hand, European governments cannot be seen to be going against their own people, whose sympathies lie with Palestine. Even if a Security Council vote goes ahead, the Palestinian bid is certain not to get the necessary two-thirds it needs to pass, because of "the US being capable of pressuring countries, Israel being able to pressure world leaders, and because of the hypocrisy of Western politics," Barghouti says. "They speak about the freedom of the Syrian people and respect for human rights in Libya, but they fail to recognize that this is also needed for Palestine," says the Palestinian politician. Mustafa Barghouti believes the Israelis are very concerned that if Palestine becomes an equal partner on the international stage, it will assume the right to appeal to the International Criminal Court and "that is probably the main reason why they [Israelis] are trying to obstruct our membership in the UN.
