Iran has inaugurated 32 research projects in the strategic field of food and agriculture with some major results. According to the minister of agriculture, some of these projects took 25 years to bear fruit. Also addressing the inauguration ceremony, which took place in the city of Karaj, Alborz Province, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the volume of production and exports will increase because farmers are applying mechanized agriculture and irrigation methods. But he also warned that the biggest challenge for the sector has to be water shortage. Untouched by Western sanctions and restrictions, Iran says it expects to earn this year at least $4.5 billion dollars through export of agricultural products. Iran exported agricultural products to the tune of 3.8 billion dollars in 2010. The country became self-sufficient in irrigation and agricultural machinery in 2008.

The Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip has meant that farmers have not been able to export most of their produce, starving them of a much needed economic lifeline. Palestinian farmers grow strawberries, peppers, tomatoes and flowers, but Israel's security blockade since 2007 has meant most produce won't find an external market. According to the terms of an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in 2005, about 400 trucks of fruit and vegetables should be exported from Gaza every day. But at the only crossing out of Gaza still operating for goods, the number of trucks making it out of the territory are much lower. Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Gaza Strip.

Jetties in Sharafkhaneh and Eslami harbors faced the same fate. The receding water has also weakened hotel business and tourism activities in the area, and planned hotel projects remain idle since investors are reluctant to continue.Beyond tourism, the salt-saturated lake threatens agriculture nearby in northwest Iran, as storms sometimes carry the salt far afield. Many farmers worry about the future of their lands, which for centuries have been famous for apples, grapes, walnuts, almonds, onions, potatoes, as well as aromatic herbal drinks, candies and tasty sweet pastes. A new virus is causing lambs to be born with deformities so severe that they die within seconds. It is thought midges brought the Schmallenberg virus to Britain from continental Europe last autumn. The foetuses of newly-pregnant ewes bitten by the insects often fail to develop properly. At Mayfield Farm near Mildenhall in Suffolk, 75 of the 1700 lambs born so far this year were affected. "In a ewe that was carrying twins, she would have a job lambing it. You would have to pull it out," said farmer Clive Sleightholme. "The legs were fused together and tucked underneath, its head was angular, not formed properly. "They had undershot jaws and they weren't fleshed out properly but nearly every one was alive when it was pulled out but only lived seconds up to a minute." The Schmallenberg virus, which is not thought to cause risk to humans, was first identified in Germany in November. There have also been cases in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Vet Toby Kemble has already seen deformed lambs at eight out of 10 sheep farms he has been to in north Norfolk this year. "It's concerning for the farmer, from their point of view they are losing lambs and losing productivity but it's very upsetting seeing the lambs," he said. This is an autonomous tractor in Iran that uses only a tilt sensor (no GPS) in order to drive along contours. It does very well. It was built by my friend Abdolabbas Jafari, Shiraz University, Iran, and shown at the 2006 ATOE conference in Kyoto, Japan.
