The Indonesian National Revolution or Indonesian War of Independence was an armed conflict and diplomatic struggle between Indonesia and the Dutch Empire, and an internal social revolution. It took place between Indonesia's declaration of independence in 1945 and the Netherlands' recognition of Indonesia's independence in 1949. One of the largest revolutions of the twentieth century, the struggle lasted for over four years and involved sporadic but bloody armed conflict, internal Indonesian political and communal upheavals, and two major international diplomatic interventions. Dutch forces were not able to prevail over the Indonesians, but were strong enough to resist being expelled.[2] Although Dutch forces could control the towns and cities in Republican heartlands on Java and Sumatra, they could not control villages and the countryside. Thus, the Republic of Indonesia ultimately prevailed as much through international diplomacy as it did through Indonesian determination in the armed conflicts on Java and other islands. The revolution destroyed the colonial administration of the Dutch East Indies which had ruled from the other side of the world. It also significantly changed racial castes, as well as reducing the power of many of the local rulers (raja). It did not significantly improve the economic or political fortune of the majority of the population, though a few Indonesians were able to gain a larger role in commerce.

February 2005 For over 30 years, Indonesia has battled GAM rebels for control of Aceh. Now, there are concerns Indonesia is exploiting the Tsunami to step up its military campaign. Under the guise of distributing rice, a helicopter sets off for Aceh. But when the aid is distributed, it lands on an American warship and is loaded with guns. Next morning, Indonesian soldiers in the region are all armed again. By taking control of reconstruction in Aceh, the Indonesian government has further entrenched its position here. Foreign journalists are no longer allowed into the region. Even aid work can only be carried out under the observation of the military. "Since the Tsunami, the Indonesian government has launched a large offensive against us, even though we declared a cease fire," complains GAM commander Kafrawi. Refugees have been forced into government camps and isolated from everyone else. "We will put up a barbed wire fence around the camp to separate the refugees from the civilian population," states military commander Lt Helmi. There are plans to keep them here for years, until the government has finally won its war against GAM. Having barely survived the Tsunami, the people of Aceh are now having their last bit of self determination taken away.

The Japanese Imperial army had surrended, and two months later British forces under the command of Lord Mountbatten arrived on the shores of Indonesia. The initial role of this army was to restore order, but they faced a daunting task as newly formed independence armies fought them - knowing that the plan was to hand Indonesia back to the Netherlands. Fierce battles were fought across Java, with the bombing of Surabaya, preceding the arrival of mainly British-Indian troops into the city. This degenerated into a historic battle, which resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians, British troops and Indonesian independence fighters. Battles on a lesser scale to the one in Surabaya raged across the towns and villages of Indonesia, often with a similar effect. Indonesians were galvanized towards the goal of Independence, and this brief occupation only resulted in the political leadership of Britain realizing Indonesia should be independent. In the short period of the British occupation of Indonesia, over 1.200 of these soldiers died or went missing, including a British General in Surabaya. Once ships arrived from the Netherlands, with Dutch army recruits, the British army left Indonesia. The result of this brief and unwelcome occupation of Indonesia, has been rarely documented in 20th century history. Many of the troops who arrived in Indonesia, deserted and joined the Indonesian independence movement,whilst their officers were often placed in the impossible ...

The forgotten land of West Papua is under brutal Indonesian military occupation. Its tribal people are being slaughtered, and their unique environment destroyed. But the world is doing nothing to stop it. In 1963, in violation of international law, Indonesia occupied and colonised the West Papuan homeland in the western part of New Guinea. Since that tragic event the West Papuans are asking for a fair referendum about their independence. At least 100.000 indigenous people lost their lives in this secret war.
