Umar Patek — a leading member of the al-Qaida-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah — told the West Jakarta District Court that he did not have the expertise to build anything as big as the 1540-pound (700-kilogram) explosive that authorities say was used in the attacks on the two clubs along with other bombs. "I would not know how to assemble such a bomb," he said, contradicting claims made to interrogators following his arrest last year in Pakistan. He told Indonesian interrogators after his capture and extradition that he spent nearly a week with co-conspirators in a Bali safehouse, painstakingly assembling the huge bomb using household items including a rice ladle, a grocer's scale and plastic bags. Patek faces a maximum penalty of death by firing squad if found guilty of various terrorism-related and criminal charges, including the Bali attacks that left 202 people dead. Indonesian police have charged militant Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir with involvement in plans of terror and military training in Aceh, taking him one step closer to trial. [Munammad Yusuf, South Jakarta Attorney's Office] "The defendant is charged with multiple counts of terrorism articles that carry a death sentence." Under Indonesia's legal system, prosecutors decide if there is enough evidence to go to court, which sets the trial date. [Lutfie Hakim, Bashir's Lawyer]: "The dossier over the investigation into Abu Bakar Bashir has been handed over to the South Jakarta attorney general's office along with many pieces of evidence. Our client said he did not recognize all the pieces of evidence, rifles and ammunition, but did recognize his cell phone." Bashir was arrested last August and is considered by many foreign governments as a driving force for radical Islamic movements in Indonesia. Bashir's detention shows Jakarta is stepping up a fight against a relatively new network plotting a coup to form a state governed by Muslim law. Bashir is the leader of Islamist group Jema'ah Ansharut Tauhid, and a founder of the al-Mukmin boarding school in Solo. One of the school's graduates was executed for planning the Bali bomb attacks in 2002 that killed over 200 people.

JAKARTA: Indonesia has arrested one of its four most wanted terror suspects over two suicide bombings in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, police said Sunday. Beni Asri was listed among the main suspects behind a suicide bombing of a packed church in Solo last week and a similar attack at a police mosque five months ago in Cirebon, both on the island of Java. "We believe that he knows about hidden packages of homemade bombs," Boy Rafli Amar told AFP, adding that the man was captured in Solok city on Sumatra island but giving no details on when the arrest was made. Last week's bombing wounded dozens of people and was carried out by a 31-year-old, Ahmad Yosepa Hayat, who police said had been involved in the Cirebon attack, when 30 people were wounded. Most of Indonesia's 200 million Muslims are moderates, but the country has struggled to deal with numerous attacks by radical extremists such as the Al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah, which carried out the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people.

A high-profile terrorism trial for an Indonesian man accused of assembling the bombs used in the 2002 Bali attack got under way Monday in Jakarta. The defendant, Umar Patek, faces charges including premeditated murder, and a maximum penalty of death if convicted. The bombings on the Indonesian resort island of Bali killed 202 people, including foreign tourists. Patek also faces charges of bringing in illegal weapons; giving weapons and explosives training; and planning and assembling explosives for church bombings in Jakarta in 2000.

Various situations were set up to develop the forces' experience and foster leadership talents just in case of an attack. Indonesia Special Forces conducted an anti-terror joint exercise on Sunday at three different locations in Banten Province on Java Island. It's part of an effort to improve counter-terrorism capabilities. The exercise mobilized about 200 participants from the navy, air force and Special Forces. [Lt. Gen. He's facing charges of funding a paramilitary training camp in Indonesia that was set to be used to plot a war against non-Muslims. Also in court... many of Bashir's followers.
