Sapardi Djoko Damono (born 20 March 1940) is a famous Indonesian poet known for lyrical poems.Well known works include Hujan Bulan Juni and Berjalan ke Barat di Waktu Pagi Hari (Walking to the West in the Morning). He is a professor at the University of Indonesia, teaching Literature in the Faculty of Letters, University of Indonesia. His extensive and intensive involvement in the university has borne him the unofficial title 'Professor of Indonesian Poets'. He was once elected dean of the faculty. Documentary 30 mins, 2004 Directed by Tonny Trimarsanto His youth was spent in Surakarta. At this time he has written a number of works sent to the magazine. His passion developed when he wrote this to take lectures in English at the University of Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Since 1974 he taught at the Faculty of Letters (now the Faculty of Humanities) University of Indonesia, but has now been retired. He became dean there and also a great teacher. During this period he also became editor of "Horizon" magazine, "Base", and "Kalam". Sapardi Djoko Damono received many awards. In 1986 SDD have the grace of the SEA Write Award. He is also the recipient of Achmad Bakrie in 2003. He is one of the founders Lontar Foundation. SDD works of poetry, so he is often called, has been translated into many languages. Indonesian artists in Jakarta have launched a campaign to revive the public image of literature. The Literature in Town Space campaign is taking poetry out of the books, and putting it on display. Here's more. The graffiti on this wall is not an advertisement or political in nature. This is poetry put on display to promote the Literature in Town Space campaign. The goal? To revive what aficionados call a nearly-forgotten art form. Ten poems in total cover walls lining major streets in the capital Jakarta. The pieces being put on display for the public are acknowledged masterpieces, composed by famous Indonesian poets such as Chairil Anwar, Gunawan Muhamad and Eka Budianta. A party was held to kick off the campaign, and hundreds of writers, artists, and film stars were in attendance. The literature lovers have plans to add more poetic graffiti in the future, though they expect most big streets to soon be filled with political campaign posters for the upcoming March 2009 election.
