Indonesian Feather-Painting Artist
Duration : 160 Seconds

Now heres a look at a unique Indonesian artist. Hes is known as the feather-painting artist. Our correspondent in Jakarta has the story. STORY: Indonesian Minister of Rural Development, Lukman Edy officially opened Cak Kandars art exhibition in Jakarta. It includes 20 paintings of scenery, animals, and people. Edy was very impressed by the artists skill of incorporating feathers in the paintings. [Lukman Edy, Minister of Rural Development]: Cak Kandar is one of the painters that I admire, especially for his creativity in producing artworks like no other. Our government staff, professionals, and people from all walks of life should take some time off their busy lives to enjoy art. I share Cak Kandars opinion in that no matter what you do in your life, sensitivity, spirituality, and respect for human values should be upheld. Cak Kandar was born on August 17, 1948 in Surabaya, Indonesia. He became a self-taught painter in 1965. He started to use feathers in his paintings in 1969. He was inspired by a statement made by the Dutch Prince Bernard about the extinction of rare animals. [Cak Kandar, Feather Painter]: He said that it is time for those who damage the environment or kill protected animals to face criminal charges. If this isnt the case, our environment and a lot of rare animal species will soon become extinct. Since then, I want to immortalize those extinct animals on canvas. For example, these are feathers of an eagle. If theres a dead eagle, I want to reconstruct it ...

Egg Shell Painting in Bali
Duration : 66 Seconds

What do you do with an eggshell? Silly question right, you throw it away! Well, thats not the case in Bali, Indonesia. Eggshells are actually a major source of income for one family. Lets find out how. In a small Village of Bali, inside a house, you can hear the sound of sandpaper rubbing on eggshells every morning. Its not easy to paint an eggshell. The round shape and its fragile structure calls for skill and great care. Mr. Ketut along with five of his brothers, has been painting egg shells for over 15 years. [I Ketut Wikarta, Egg Shell Painter]: Our community used to only paint on paper. But one day a tourist from Germany came and asked if we painted eggshells. We did it with raw eggs at first, but then they would rot. So we had the idea of taking out the egg's yolk so it won't go bad. Then we rub the surface with sandpaper and we paint on the shells surface. Its richness of the colors and the uniqueness of the art that makes them very popular with tourists, who pay anywhere from 10 to 150 dollars for just one of his masterpieces. Mr. Ketut paints on a variety of eggs, such as duck egg, goose egg, ostrich egg and is able to finish two or three paintings a day. NTD, Bali, Indonesia.

Private Walls -- An Accidental Art Collector
Duration : 369 Seconds

Last month, Dinah and her husband flew to Bali looking for a koi painting to complement their new home. Instead they returned with nine different artworks, ranging from paintings to woodcrafts. A successful banker in her early 30s, Dinah is new to collecting art. While she humbly adds that her collection is limited, it was clear that she knew her stuff. A giant 200 x 110 cm koi painting greeted us the instant we stepped into her polished apartment. Before purchasing it, Dinah researched on price levels and studied the differences in koi paintings from Japan, China and Indonesia. Eventually, koi from Indonesia triumphed. Together with her husband, they stayed in Bali for a week to scout for the right painting. Despite advocating the need to research when buying art, she had to admit that there have been impulse purchases. "I knew I had to bring it home the moment I saw it" she laughed heartily, referring to a "Fisherman" her first purchase from Indonesian artist, Wayan Suarmadi. In the following interview, Dinah shares her buying experience, how she decides on the amount to spend for art and why is the attraction towards Indonesian art so strong.
