| Indonesian Artists Launch Literature in Town Space Duration : 88 Seconds Indonesian artists in Jakarta have launched a campaign to revive the public image of literature. The Literature in Town Space campaign is taking poetry out of the books, and putting it on display. Here's more. The graffiti on this wall is not an advertisement or political in nature. This is poetry put on display to promote the Literature in Town Space campaign. The goal? To revive what aficionados call a nearly-forgotten art form. Ten poems in total cover walls lining major streets in the capital Jakarta. The pieces being put on display for the public are acknowledged masterpieces, composed by famous Indonesian poets such as Chairil Anwar, Gunawan Muhamad and Eka Budianta. A party was held to kick off the campaign, and hundreds of writers, artists, and film stars were in attendance. The literature lovers have plans to add more poetic graffiti in the future, though they expect most big streets to soon be filled with political campaign posters for the upcoming March 2009 election. [Zen Hae, Literature in Town Space Campaign Member]: MALE SOUNDBITE IN INDONESIAN (MAN IN GRAY SHIRT) We have to fight with other commercial banners, existing graffiti or political campaign posters, so we only have a bit of space. But I think it will be enough to surprise people that literature can also be an ornament to the city. [Riri Rizal, Indonesian Movie Director]: MALE SOUNDBITE IN INDONESIAN (MAN IN PINK SHIRT) I really enjoy the simplicity of art when we can use everyday language to ... | | Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? with English Subtitles Duration : 6336 Seconds What's Up with Love? (Indonesian: Ada Apa dengan Cinta?) is a 2002 Indonesian film directed by Rudy Soedjarwo. The Indonesian title is a play on words, as Cinta (Indonesian for "love") is also the name of the main character. As such, the title can be translated as "What's Up with Love?" as well as "What's Up with Cinta?", meaning the person. The film is coloured with Indonesian mainstream as well as sidestream values, elements of classical culture and politics, and real issues encountered in teen life. The film raised censorship controversies among conservative Muslims in Indonesia, being the first Indonesian teen movie that featured a kissing scene. PLOT Cinta is a popular teenage girl living a comfortable lifestyle. She is gifted and accomplished, surrounded by a group of faithful friends, and has caring and supportive parents. The story begins with Cinta and her four best friends crying on each other's shoulders for Alya, who was the victim of domestic abuse by her father. Cinta recites the group's pledge to the buku curhat, a diary or scrapbook shared by the girls, that a problem one of them is going through is to be shared with all of them. Cinta is a school poet who has been honored for her work, and, in her final year of high school, she submits a beautiful poem to the yearly poetry contest. However, the grand prize in the contest is awarded to a boy named Rangga. However, Rangga, rather than going to the podium to receive his prize, took offence and retreated to a ... | | Counting Conflicts. In English and Indonesian with subtitles Duration : 659 Seconds The fall of the New Order in 1998 was accompanied by an upsurge in violent conflict in Indonesia. The largest episodes of violent conflict in Aceh, Papua, Maluku, North Maluku, Central Sulawesi, Central Kalimantan and West Kalimantan are well known. Far less attention has been paid to localized violent conflicts, which have affected most of the country. An emerging literature seeks to understand violent conflict in Indonesia through the compilation and analysis of datasets that record conflict incidents reported in newspapers. This video presents the Violent Conflict in Indonesia study (ViCIS) being conducted by the World Bank Conflict and Development team in Indonesia. The ViCIS study uses local newspaper monitoring to track the incidence, forms and impacts of localized violent conflict. By using local newspapers, the study finds levels of localized violence higher than has been detected by previous studies that rely on the provincial and national press. Preliminary results from 6 provinces suggest that violent conflict incidence and impact are more widespread than previously thought. Methodologically, the study demonstrates the utility of the newspaper method, the importance of using sources below the provincial level, and of including a program of qualitative research as part of the compilation of a violent conflict database. Using this methodology, the Conflict and Development program is currently expanding the study to assemble a dataset of violent conflict in ... Tags :

| | The Indonesian Kris Duration : 186 Seconds UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The kris or keris is a distinctive, asymmetrical dagger from Indonesia. Both weapon and spiritual object, the kris is considered to possess magical powers. The earliest known kris go back to the tenth century and most probably spread from the island of Java throughout South-East Asia. Kris blades are usually narrow with a wide, asymmetrical base. The sheath is often made from wood, though examples from ivory, even gold, abound. A kris aesthetic value covers the dhapur (the form and design of the blade, with some 40 variants), the pamor (the pattern of metal alloy decoration on the blade, with approximately 120 variants), and tangguh referring to the age and origin of a kris. A bladesmith, or empu, makes the blade in layers of different iron ores and meteorite nickel. In high quality kris blades, the metal is folded dozens or hundreds of times and handled with the utmost precision. Empus are highly respected craftsmen with additional knowledge in literature, history and occult sciences. Kris were worn everyday and at special ceremonies, and heirloom blades are handed down through successive generations. Both men and women wear them. A rich spirituality and mythology developed around this dagger. Kris are used for display, as talismans with magical powers, weapons, sanctified heirlooms, auxiliary equipment for court soldiers, accessories for ceremonial dress ...
