Rising Religious Violence Threatens Democracy in Indonesia
Duration : 201 Seconds

In Indonesia religious violence has been on the rise for the past few years but the recent brutal attack on the Ahmadiyah sect has focused national attention on the problem. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for disbanding any Muslim groups involved in violence. But as VOA's Brian Padden reports from Jakarta, there is growing concern that religious intolerance could threaten Indonesia's stability and democratic development.

Indonesian film stirs religious controversy
Duration : 154 Seconds

A film about religious tolerance in Indonesia has been pulled from a major TV network after an Islamist group warned the film could trigger nationwide violence. Question Mark tackles the issue of religious harmony by showing a Buddhist family, a Muslim family and a woman who converts to Christianity, all living together. But the Islamic Defenders Front, a group with a history of violence, siad the message of pluralism is dangerous. The organisation says it is insulting to show a Muslim playing the role of Jesus in a church play. The group has forced one of Indonesia's main television channels not to air the film. Salim Alatas, from the Islamic Defenders Front said: "We are worried that if Muslims feel insulted there will be burning and rioting, that's what we have to prevent. "That's why the SCTV channel has cancelled the showing because they were afraid." The Indonesian press council says Question Mark is educational because it can teach people about Indonesian values that tend to be forgotten. The council wants the film, which was shown in theatres, to be broadcast on television. Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from Jakarta.

Indonesia: religious freedom in jeopardy
Duration : 200 Seconds

Is Pastor Palti wrong? Did you know Indonesia as a nation started off as a great example upholding religious freedom. Standing outside his forcibly-closed church talking to CSW, Pastor Palti paints a worryingly different picture. CSW investigated increasing levels of religious persecution in the country during a fact-finding visit to Indonesia this summer, and found an increasing trend of forced church closures. During the visit, our team made a short film to help you understand the issues. Watch CSW's 3-minute Indonesia film Watch the film to help you understand the issues. You can also sign-up to the bi-monthly Response newsletter for short articles about CSW's responses to global religious persecution.

Indonesia Religious Tensions Sparks Violence
Duration : 302 Seconds

In Indonesia recent attacks on churches and other minorities have raised concerns about the rise of conservative Islamic groups. One region where tensions have been running high between Christians and Muslims is the Jakarta suburb of Bekasi - where recently a church member was stabbed. For many it is further evidence of religious intolerance, which the government is under increasing pressure to tackle. ( news.bbc.co.uk )

Ambon's Religious Bloodbath - Indonesia
Duration : 1242 Seconds

April 1999 It's no wonder inhabitants are risking their lives to leave a Place where there is so much death. Rare video captures a mob wielding machetes and fire-bombing houses. "I took out my sword and took off four heads," says one gang member. 50000 Muslims gather at the dock to escape, clambering up makeshift ropes onto an overcrowded ship. Christians soon arrive on another boat, refugees from a different island. They are chased back to their ship. The army is all that stands between the factions. Many accuse local criminals of exploiting religious tension to gain power in the vacuum left by Suharto. The migration policies that forced the archipelago together are now falling apart, and the islands are left hanging together by a fine political thread. The History of Religions in Indonesia (Islam,Christianity,Hinduism,Buddhism,Confucianism)
Duration : 604 Seconds

CORRECTION : ISLAM CAME TO INDONESIA IN 7th CENTURY,NOT 17th CENTURY !!! The reason I'm making this video is to respond the ignorant and stupid comments of people who do not know about the history of religions living in Indonesia.exp : "Islam has killed many non-Muslims in Indonesia ! " really ? Do you find the evidence? , or you just watch and hear the propaganda news abroad ?. precisely in Indonesia, religious activities are protected by the government, both of religions that have been recognized as an official religion or religion not officially recognized.Indonesian people whatever their religion is very religious society, this proves there are no temples or houses of worship were destroyed, while many Indonesian people no longer embrace that religions.so anyone who wants to give a comment insulting Indonesia and religions that exist in this video, chances are I will not accept that comments, except comments which explains more about the history of religions in Indonesia..Please be Advise !!!

Facebook comment lands atheist in jail

Human rights activists and religious scholars in Indonesia are demanding the release of a man who wrote on Facebook that he did not believe in God. Alexander An, a 31-year-old civil servant, is facing five years in prison after being charged with defamation of religion. He says he started to question the existence of God when he was a child. Although the country is officially secular, every Indonesian has to have a religion and register himself according to one of the official five religions. Religious intolerance and violence are on the rise in Indonesia. Hardline muslims are persecuting members of an Islamic sect, apparently with official backing. The ABC's exclusive footage shows military and police intelligence officers planning with muslim clerics to take over mosques belonging to the Ahmadiyah sect. Last week three parcel bombs were sent to different locations in Jakarta seriously wounding a police officer, in what were thought to be separate acts of religious intolerance. Clash of Faiths in Indonesia 1 of 2 - BBC Our World Documentary
Duration : 673 Seconds

Clash of Faiths in Indonesia 1 of 2 - BBC Our World Documentary, recorded 25.09.2010 After the death of Suharto in Indonesia, the country became a secular democratic state. This has fueled the fire of religious conflict in the country, as Islam is becoming the dominant majority. Tensions are rising between the Muslims and other faiths who want to practice in public. The state is starting to step in after 44 people are killed in riot between Christians and Muslims. We are shown a heated confrontation between a group of local muslim radicals and a group of christians that try and open a Church in the area. The leader of the Islamic group accuses the Christian Priest of "trying to prostitute his religion". The Our World reporters ask the question, why is this happening??? One interviewed Sociologist believes it is because many political, religious and ideological groups were suppressed under Suharto, including the Islamists, and now that they are the dominant force in the region, they are seeking a similar form of control, which is causing the problem of religious sectarian violence to grow at a terrifying rate.

21st Century War - Indonesia
Duration : 1487 Seconds

8 January 2001 Arguably globalisation did everyone a favour by melting down the economy of Indonesia because it laid bare a lot of despotism and corruption, The tragedy is that globalisation didn't just flatten the crony capitalists, but also the ordinary people who had just been working hard according to the local rules. The question now is whether institutions like the IMF can take advantage of the moment, or whether it will squash them into the ground; whether ultimately the IMF cares only about the interests of powerful countries and corporations....

Islamic Riots - Indonesia
Duration : 955 Seconds

March 1997 We examine the rising tensions in Indonesia. A Buddhist temple is engulfed in flames as a frenzied mob yells abuse. They have found a target for their anger: the 3% Chinese population which controls 70% of private wealth. Saturday night in Jakarta: the rich attend the opening of Fashion Café. Ethnic Chinese rub shoulders with Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell. Miles away in a rural kampong, a young ethnic Indonesian tells bitterly of how her parents' home was bulldozed to make way for development. Muslim and impoverished, she blames the Chinese for her problems. Chipping away at his handicap on manicured golf course, Chinese billionaire, Bob Hasan, denounces the rioting as "communist motivated" and "small, small". But Brabit Medatema shows us the charred and blackened interior of the Buddhist temple he helped to build. When his home was attacked by the mob all he could do was escape with his family. Huddling in church, Chinese Christians fared no better. In an attempt to quell increasing resentment, many Chinese are converting to Islam. Without bodyguards and high walls, the ordinary Chinese pay the price for the success of their wealthier compatriots. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
