Standard Chartered - ASEAN economic integration
Duration : 305 Seconds

18 Nov 2011 CNBC Tom Aaker is CEO, Standard Chartered Indonesia. "It gives us a terrific opportunity. Our business is split between retail banking and wholesale banking. Each of them will take great strides forward because of integration in the ASEAN community. As trade builds around the region we are in a terrific position. It's about having an open and fair trading playing field. We all can enable companies to grow here but we don't want to be disadvantaged to local banks. International banks like us have expertise. We can bring that talent and play a big role. Foreign investors have come into the country for the long-term. Standard Chartered has been in Indonesia for 148 years. If the governments reduce the ability for foreign investors to own and control banks it will make it less attractive for us. We have a very fortunate footprint. We are in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. We have been very strong, very liquid and well-capitalized, not like our European competitors. Our strategy is all about organic growth. I think at the moment the big risk is if foreign investors get very nervous generally and pull money out. That has less to do with Indonesia and more to do with their portfolios. About 6 weeks ago 10 billion dollars did flow out of the country but the central bank intervened and a lot of those dollars flowed back in."
