Aarti Haridwar - Louise & Stuart's Amazing India Travel
Duration : 222 Seconds

Aarti in Haridware The banks of the Ganges crowded with hundreds of people bathing in the holy Ganga. Aarti, like the religious ceremony celebrated in Varanasi, starts at sunset. We were surprised when by 6PM both sides of the Ganges were nearly full. By 6:30 there were literally thousands of Indians there to celebrate Arti! I have attended Arti in Haridwar many many times, but this was like New Year's Eve at an Indian Times Square! It seems that tonight was special...Ganga's Birthday.....and when the Ganges River has a birthday, it goes all out! We managed to get a place to sit right at the main ghats. Out of thousands of Indians, there are only about 10 foreigners MAX in all of Haridwar at this time of year! Maybe it's because at 4:30 PM the sun is shining on the ghats like high noon on the hottest day of the year! Evening, however, is cool and wonderful on the river, which is all lit up and festive. That is when the place really comes to life. Daytime is for "dipping in the Ganges", and for kids diving for coins that worshipers toss in the cool, refreshing water. As we sat awaiting the music which heralds the start of Aarti, a speaker announced the arrival of a special Guru. He arrived with an entourage and was greeted with cheers and waving hands. Behind him were men carrying a golden "Ark of the Covenant" type of shrine on a platform. It was festooned with bushels of flowers, which were thrown out and handed by the handfuls to the people. Leis of flowers were also tossed to the crowds. I was covered with flowers, and people passed some flowers on to people who hadn't gotten any. At a designated time everyone tossed the flowers back toward the Ganges. One specially appointed gentleman squeezed his way through the crowd showering the throng with sweet lightly scented rose water from a funky pump propelled watering can. As it was a bit warm sitting in such a crowd, the shower of water on my head was a welcome respite. I just had to warn Stuart to cover the camera whenever I felt a splash or noticed the "water guy" approaching. The music started, incense, oil lamps with dripping hot wax and fire, and overhead...FIREWORKS! It was wonderful! I even got to hold a stainless steel plate full of fire, and make a circle with it and pass it on! With s much wax and fire, and women in Saris, it's always a wonder that no one is set on fire! Sweet offerings were given out at the end of the ceremony, as well as fruits from trays heaped with grapes and small peaches. Now that is what I call a birthday celebration. Although Arti is done nightly, it is not on such a grand scale. I guess that was enough for one day. Elephant Festival, Jaipur-Louise & Stuart's Amazing India Travel
Duration : 414 Seconds

The elephant festival show yesterday was wonderful! It was what we had missed last year and the thing that I had most wanted to see! There were more than 100 elephants, all intricately painted and decorated, processing in a giant arena-like stadium. There were special canopied seats for the tourists....and there were hundreds and hundreds of people. There were also camels, oxen, Brahma bulls, dancing girls (some decorated with elaborate peacock costumes), monkey gods, and lord knows what else that I don't have time to mention. But the elephants... they were gigantic ...with the riders looking as if they could touch the sky. Some of the more outstanding had glitter and "sparkles" added to the paint....To this was added colorful fabrics all over the beasts.....the tusks...the ears.... The elephant polo match was cool too. Misc Clips-Louise & Stuart's Amazing India Travel
Duration : 523 Seconds

Namaste Louise and I, Stuart Sims, spend 3 months out of ever year in India. Here are some movie clips of India..Enjoy! India is the ultimate travel experience. And once one falls in love with India one does not have the slightest desire to go anywhere else.. Sure I still want to see Egypt and Istanbul, but having traveled to India for 3 months each year for many years now. I always get the itch during the rest of the year when I am not in India. There is no flora and fauna like India's. There is no topography like India's (from pristine beaches all the way to, and in between, up to the Himalayas). There are no cities as wild and exciting as those in India. There is no diversity of cultures in any country that can match India's. There is no more spectacular and diverse Architecture than India's. There is no tolerance like the tolerance of India. But most importantly there are NO people on the planet that can match the kindness, warmth, genuine concern, interest in foreigners, and "Chanti' of the India people. They are as close to divine as you will find on this miserable globe! One does not go to India like one goes to the Bahamas, one goes to India to find the inner self and strength, along with everything else.. At times, one wants to pull one's hair out and then Mother India says here, "I have a gift for you". Then one is transported to another realm. Camel Fair-Louise and Stuart's Amazing India Travels
Duration : 431 Seconds

Louise and Stuart's Amazing India AdventuresThe Jaisalmer Camel Fair Held once a year the Jaisalmer Camel Fair is a specticle beyond belief. Anyway we arrived in Jaisalmer and found a very nice hotel. The manager and all he boys are very friendly, and that makes a big difference. The Desert Festival was magnificent! It was held in three different locations......a nearby giant "stadium"......a dessert-like park....and out in the sand dunes. The camel judging contest was a special treat because to our surprise, our good friend from Pushkar was entered. Camel and rider are completely covered in colorful trappings and mirrored cloth. Our friend has won the Pushkar fair for the past four years, but he has until this year only succeeded in capturing second place in the Jaisalmer Festival. This year He Won! He was overjoyed and so glad to see that we were there to witness his victory. There was a tug of war between the Indian women and the foreign traveler women...and the foreigners won. Camel Polo was a blast. It was exciting and funny all at the same time. Everyone was cheering and hopping around. There were also cricket games, and strange Indian games. My favorite was the camel tattooing. Not tattoo as you might think....but camel maneuvers. The boarder guard who patrol the Pakistan/ Jaisalmer Camel Fair boarder (which is only about 60 miles away, are expert riders. Their camels are the tallest and the best, and you should see the acrobatics they perform on camel back.....sort of like the Arabian Horse rider antics. They came marching into the fairgrounds two by two, all decked out....with the military band in full dress riding in on camels behind them....beating drums and playing brass instruments. Very regal...all precision marching. The whole thing looked like the camel version of the Radio City Music Hall Rockets. The 12 Fingered Man-Louise and Stuart's Amazing India Travel
Duration : 64 Seconds

I, Stuart Sims, first met the '12 Fingered Man' in Udiapur in 1989. In 2007, Louise and I found ourselves wandering around the busy little shopping district of Udiapur. We always have our eyes open to discover any new and interesting items to sell on our soon to be published web-site, http://www.PortalToIndia.com so when we noticed some unusual perfume bottles in a shop window, we went in to explore. Although sterling silver jewelry, (jewellery) and tribal art are what we usually look for, the bottles were intriguing. The proprietor pointed out that the bottles were made of specially molded camel hide. As I was mentioning to Louise that I had seen such bottles only once before, the man asked Louise "What is different between your hands and mine?". He was smiling like a fox and had a smug nonchalant look on his face as he poured perfume into a small glass bottle. Louise was a bit perplexed and said that his hands were a bit darker than hers. On closer inspection, she added that they were also larger. Larger! They were larger because there were six fingers on each hand! Each finger was perfectly formed, articulated, and positioned in a symmetrical line. Her astonishment was all the man could ask for. He was as proud as punch of his hands, and rightfully so. They were like a link in the chain of evolution. Maybe we were meant to have 12 fingers! He explained that he was married and had children, but none of his children inherited their father's special trait. Obviously, I had wandered into the same shop that I had visited 9 years earlier. It's always nice to rediscover old friends. The twelve fingered man rests on the fringe of being one of our most unique Indian friends. Namaste!
