Architecture - Monuments - Sculpture -- History - Faces Of India. Story of India
Duration : 482 Seconds

India is as diverse as any 'land mass' can be — it is a miniature world, a complete planet by itself. It is often referred to as a 'museum of anthropology', a 'laboratory of living cultures' and an 'open air museum of artefacts'. Over 5000 years old civilization and 3500 years of uninterrupted history; here many civilizations flourished, kingdoms rose and fell — leaving behind an array of splendid historic attractions, deserted monuments, battle-scarred forts and exquisite temples. There is stunning diversity of religions, ethnicities, peoples and cultures and the towns are cornucopia of images - ancient structures, vibrant markets, colourful people, multi-cultural mix of mosques and temples. And born out of these complex interactions between different races and cultures over several thousand years are rich and varied traditions of music and dance, textiles, arts and crafts, paintings and cuisines. One definition of a great civilization is the magnificence of its architectural legacy, and India is surely among the foremost. It is home to almost every conceivable historic style due to its numerous intra-cultural interactions. On one hand are world famous forts, palaces, tombs and caves, and on the other hand are structures still cloaked in obscurity, off the tourist circuit, waiting to be 'discovered'. Referring to the architectural heritage of undivided India, Lord Curzon once commented that it was 'the greatest galaxy of monuments in the world'. The story of this ...

A World of Beauty and Grace: Islamic Architecture of India
Duration : 622 Seconds

The architecture of Islamic mosques and tombs is an invaluable treasure of world heritage. Many countries have taken inspiration from this tradition. It is well know that the most famous Islamic monument of the world, the Taj Mahal, is in India. What is not equally well known is that the second oldest mosque in the world is also in India, in Kerala. In fact, India has a vast and rich architectural heritage of Islam, from Kerala in the South till Kashmir in the North, from Tripura in the East till Gujarat in the West. This film by noted photographer Benoy Behl showcases how these monuments are a great treasure of India's culture and how many of them are recognized as World Heritage Monuments. The confluence of local talent with inspirations from Iran, Arabia, and Central Asia has also been highlighted in this film. These mosques, tombs, madrassas, palaces and fortresses are a beautiful and unique treasure of the heritage of Islamic architecture.

TEDxSalem - Durga Jagadish - Vernacular Architecture
Duration : 1299 Seconds

Durga Jagadish is a specialist in Vernacular Architecture, which is "Architecture that is Artisanal -- "Of the Craft". She says, "Vernacular architecture is an exercise of love. It's not bound by the strict rules of rationality, industrialization and modernism. It's fanciful, whimsical and innovative with an inherent structure much like the temples of India. They are as structured as much as they are fruits of loving labour and passionate innovation. The vernacular can never die, as all you have to do is just delve into your past or the collective past of your people to find a treasure trove that's yours to re-interpret and reconnect with." To learn more about Durga & her works at Center for Vernacular Architecture(CVA), visit www.vernarch.com (www.tedxsalem.com) About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. India - Mumbai Bandra Worli Sea Link Architecture (BWSL)
Duration : 598 Seconds

The Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) (Marathi: वांद्रे वरळी सागरी सेतू), officially the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, (Marathi: राजीव गांधी सागरी सेतू), is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete viaduct approaches, which links Bandra and the western suburbs of Mumbai with Worli and central Mumbai, and is the first phase of the proposed West Island Freeway system. The Rs. 1600 crore ($ 400 million approx.) project of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) was executed by Hindustan Construction Company, with design and project management by DAR Consultants. The bridge was dedicated to the public on 30 June 2009 by Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, although only 4 of 8 lanes are in service. The Sea Link reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli from 4560 minutes to 7 minutes. The link has an average daily traffic of around 37500 vehicles per day, about half the pre-opening estimate of 70000 The Bandra Worli Sea link project is a part of the Western Freeway Sea Project, which, in turn, is a part of a larger proposal to upgrade the road transportation network of greater Mumbai. It is primarily meant to provide an alternative to the Mahim Causeway route that is presently the only connection between South Mumbai and the Western and Central suburbs. The project starts from the intersection of Western Express Highway and SV Road at the Bandra end, and connects it to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road (Worli ...

Pearl Academy of Fashion
Duration : 322 Seconds

The Pearl Academy of Fashion, Jaipur is a campus which by virtue of its design is geared towards creating an environmentally responsive passive habitat. This campus is designed by Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis. The institute creates interactive spaces for a highly creative student body to work in multifunctional zones which blend the indoors with the outdoors seamlessly. The radical architecture of the institute emerges from a fusion of the rich traditional building knowledge bank and cutting edge contemporary architecture. Besides having become a very successful model for cost effective passive architecture in desert regions the design and facilities of the campus complement the ideology of the Pearl Academy of Fashion -- a cutting edge design institute with a sustainable approach. The Pearl Academy of Fashion is an example of an inclusive architecture which intends to accommodate all the heritage values while positioning it within the contemporary cultural and architectural paradigm. The project was selected for the 2009 World Festival Awards, where the jury were impressed by the way the architect had reinterpreted known building types and crafts, especially in relation to passive environmental measures. Local vernacular elements -- such as jali screens - merged with a contemporary design aesthetic that gave this building the necessary monumental scale for this industry based educational institution. Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis is a collective ...
