Icelandic Volcanoes: Interactions Between Volcanoes, Ice and Atmosphere
Duration : 4088 Seconds

Lecture by Thor Thordarson given at the Geological Society on 19 January 2011 as part of the 2011 Shell London Lecture series. Iceland is one of the most active volcanic regions in the world, with over 20 eruptions each century producing more than 5.5 cubic kilometers of magma. In early 2010, the UK experienced the effects of Iceland's volatile landscape when the volcanic plume produced by Eyjafjallajökull caused ash to reach the air space of the UK and mainland Europe. It is the interaction between fire and ice which makes Iceland's eruptions so spectacular -- many eruptions occur beneath glaciers, which contains the pressure of an eruption until it becomes great enough to cause an explosion of magma and steam. Contact between magma and ice causes the magma to cool rapidly to form glass-type needles -- the reason aircraft were grounded. Icelandic volcanoes have been active for many thousands of years, and will continue to be so in the future. This talk will explore the mechanism of the eruptions and their effects, not only on the country itself, but further afield.

The financial crash in Iceland in 6 minutes according to ABC´s 20/20.
Duration : 370 Seconds

In the early 21st century, Iceland experienced one of the most spectacular cycles of boom and bust in history. For centuries, Iceland was a simple fishing society, largely shut off from mainland Europe. The people survived off the sheep in the meadows and the fish in the sea. For cultural sustenance they had elaborate sagas -- intricate tales of fairies and goblins, heroes and ghosts -- that would inspire JRR Tolkien and other fantasy writers. At the peak of Iceland's boom, Stefan Alfsson left his fishing boat and started trading commodities for an investment bank. "We could do more," he said. "I got a bigger house, bigger and more cars, better snowmobiles." Then a modern saga began to unfold -- that of a nation of fishermen who became millionaires, only to lose it all and return to the seas. Watch the full story according to ABC´s 20/20
