I have spent the last few days on an organic barley farm in Iceland. Due to the collapse of the economy last October, the population is eating local barley instead of imported rice.

The Sheep farming Museum is in Strandir NW-Iceland only 10 km south of Holmavik village. The Museum concentrates not only on sheep farming and the relationship between sheep and man but also it provides diverse entertainment for all ages. The children can enjoy themselves in their own room, in which are toys and colour books, while the grown-ups can view the exhibition. One of the main attraction in the Sheep Farming Museum are lambs which the visitors can feed with milk from a bottle.

Icelandic lamb is a wonderfully flavorful, exceptionally lean meat from animals raised with no antibiotics, ever and no added hormones. Pesticides and herbicides are seldom used in Iceland where the climate naturally protects the land. All in all, Icelandic lambs are amazingly robust and live in an idyllic, geographically isolated country' whose strict agriculture regulations protect the integrity of the lamb you are buying. In early fall, farmers mount spirited, pony-sized Icelandic horses and ride high into the mountains to collect their lambs. Although the lambs wear tiny identifying markers, their owners often recognize them by sight—even from afar. This annual event, called réttir, culminates in a celebration with singing, dancing and traditional delicacies such as lamb soup. But since roundup only happens once a year, fresh Icelandic lamb is, alas, only available from September through early December. Each year traditional herdsman take to the back country to round up thousands of the country's hardy horses, which have spent the summer grazing in the highlands. If rivers rising and cattle farms being flooded is not enough to cause evacuations and misery to residents in the surrounding region to the recently erupting volcano Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland, it has also affected the air space with ash and the environment of Northern Europe as far away as Scotland and beyond. In a conversation with Dr. Pall Einarsson, a Geophysicist at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik and one of the top experts monitoring the volcano from the comfort of his own office, sitting in front of his computer monitors about 120 km or 75 miles from the volcanic eruption, it is becoming apparent that the worse could still come, The neighboring dormant but bigger volcano Katla which is only a few 20 odd kilometers (9 miles) away could erupt from the rumblings in the belly of the mother earth due to the dykes separating the two breaking open. Furthermore the scenario seems quite likely considering 2010 is the year when Katla was predicted to erupt. If this truly happens then the catastrophy is quite difficult to assess. The transatlantic corridors from all of western Europe to and from North America will be seriously damaged by the volcanic ash and new corridors and flight detours will have to be evaluated. The volcanic eruption will also cause serious climate change in a wide region of the earth and damage health, farm animals and property. This threat of a major natural disaster could have serious consequences to the environment , air traffic and travel ...

An important source of income for the farmers in north eastern Iceland is the collection of Eider down. The down is replaced with hay, the Eider don't appear to be bothered by the event and return to their nests to continue sitting on the eggs as soon as the collectors move on.

On the west shore of Lake Winnipeg, an hours drive from the city of Winnipeg, Icelandic immigrants settled Gimli in 1895. Its Historical Museum highlights fishing and farming, the two most important occupations of the immigrants. Today, a picturesque harbor has room for 300 boats and the town has themed its commercial district with a fishing village motif. Tourists come to Gimli to swim, sunbath, and sail, go boating, sail boarding and fishing.
