The Icelandic Opera
Duration : 134 Seconds

The Icelandic Opera reflects its location in its architectural expression. A location that is characterised by the cultural urban landscape, the Borgarholt-elf hill and the church as its immediate neighbours. The initial concept for the Opera took its form from a cubic geometry that is replicated throughout the whole building both on the facade and the interior. The facade is characterised by the distinctive heavy base, broken up by the large cubic window openings. Above, in sharp contrast to the base, lies a shining and distinctive cube which continues through the entire building.

Asmundarsafn Sculpture Museum
Duration : 204 Seconds

Ásmundarsafn The Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum is dedicated to the works of sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982). Opened in 1983, the collection is housed in a unique building designed and constructed mostly by the artist himself from 1942-1950, drawing on architectural ideas from the Mediterranean, the domed buildings of the Middle East, and the pyramids of Egypt. The original building served Sveinsson as studio and home; behind it he built a crescent-shaped structure as a work- and exhibition space. Architect Mannfreð Vilhjálmsson designed the addition that now joins the crescent-shaped and original buildings. A sculpture garden surrounds the Museum, adorned with nearly thirty of the artist's sculptures. Ásmundur Sveinsson was a pioneer of sculpture in Iceland. He found his inspiration in the Icelandic landscape, literature, and people. The central features of the collection are massive, powerful and sometimes provocative works in praise of the Icelandic common people, folktales and nature.

DESIGN IT Shelter Competition : Esja Mountain Skýli, Iceland
Duration : 173 Seconds

The weather demands that Icelandic shelters or "skýli" must express the ideals of enclosure. This shelter focuses on the thermal envelope: a foundation of black lava stone collected on site, earth-sheltered on the uphill elevation, and black cladding to absorb the low angled Icelandic sunlight. The form relates to the Icelandic vernacular of farm buildings and mountain refuges: pitched roof, earth-sheltering, wood siding, and punched openings for operable windows. This proposed shelter on the mountain, Esja, (near Reykjavik, Iceland) is intended for tree planting volunteers and hikers. It is located in a highland area where trees are planted each season to mitigate soil erosion on the steep slopes. It is an inhabitable link between the humane shelter of the sparse forest and the vast scale of the exposed mountain heights.

ExoBuilding - Breathing Life into Architecture
Duration : 138 Seconds

Schnädelbach, H., Glover, K., Irune, A., ExoBuilding - Breathing Life Into Architecture, in proceedings of NordiCHI 2010, Reykjavik, Iceland, ACM Press, 2010 ExoBuilding explores the novel design space that emerges when an individual‟s physiological data and the fabric of building architecture are linked. Developed in early 2009, ExoBuilding is a tent-like structure that externalises a person‟s physiological data in an immersive and visceral way. This is achieved by mapping abdominal breathing to its shape and size, displaying heart beat through sound and light effects and mapping electro dermal activity to a projection on the tent fabric. The research is positioned in relation to previous work and the iterative development of ExoBuilding from to-scale to full-size prototype is described. The design process, feedback gathered alongside and observations allow the discussion of wider issues: the different scales possible, the temporal nature of the data, ownership and ambiguity of that data, ranges of control and the aggregation of data in a building context. This leads to the presentation of directions for future research at this exciting boundary between Architecture, HCI and medical science.
