By the time Laki stopped erupting in February 1784, it had spewed out over eight millions tons of the highly toxic chemical flourine. With livestock feeding on the poisoned ash which had fallen, Laki was to cast a deadly shadow over Iceland as it claimed the lives 10000 people. This is a documentary created from footage I shot while studying in Iceland during May 2009. During my stay at Solheimar, I learned about the topics of sustainability and Icelandic history, culture, and ecology. The University of Alabama's Capstone International organized the program, and Dr. Michael Steinberg (New College) and Dave Oakes (Center for Ecological Living and Learning) instructed the coursework. Funding for the film was given by The University of Alabama Honors College and Dr. Bruce Roche from the Alabama Advertising Education Foundation. Filmed and edited by Emily Roberson with the guidance of Wendy Reed, producer for Alabama Public Television.

Scientists say history has proven that when the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupts, Katla follows - the only question is how soon. And Katla, located under the massive Myrdalsjokull icecap, threatens disastrous flooding and explosive blasts when it blows. Saturday's eruption at Eyjafjallajokull - dormant for nearly 200 years - forced at least 500 people to evacuate. Most have returned to their homes, but authorities were waiting for scientific assessments to determine whether they were safe to stay. Residents of 14 farms nearest to the eruption site were told to stay away. Several small tremors were felt early on Monday, followed by spurts of lava and steam rocketing into the air. Iceland sits on a large volcanic hot spot in the Atlantic's mid-oceanic ridge. Eruptions, common throughout Iceland's history, are often triggered by seismic activity when the Earth's plates move and when magma from deep underground pushes its way to the surface. Like earthquakes, predicting the timing of volcanic eruptions is an imprecise science. An eruption at the Katla volcano could be disastrous, however - both for Iceland and other nations. Iceland's Laki volcano erupted in the mid-1780s, freeing gases that turned into smog. The smog floated across the Jet Stream, lowering temperatures and changing weather patterns. Many died from gas poisoning in the British Isles. Crop production fell in western Europe. Famine spread. Some even linked the eruption, which helped fuel famine, to the French ...

BTW this aint Eyjafjalla Glacier but the new/smaller Volcano that had been erupting for a month before Eyjafjallajokull erupted. yeah 2 volcanos in almost 2 monts, hope Katla aint next, still Third times a charm :S Some footage of recent volcanic activity in Iceland. Some historical info on that greater area taken from wikipedia: 1783 June 8 The volcano Laki, in Iceland, begins an 8-month eruption which kills 9350 people (25% of the population) and starts a 7-year famine. The eruption causes deaths of livestock when they eat contaminated grass and also widespread crop failure. Effects of the Laki volcano were felt all over Europe.. Filmed over two weeks last summer when the band undertook a free tour of Iceland, 'Heima' stands as a colossal labour of love - not to say grand folly - typical of this most exacting of bands. While most people set up a few cameras at, say, a festival, and call it a DVD, Sigur Rós decided they would push the boat (bus and plane) out for their debut venture into live film, hauling 40-plus people round 15 locations to the furthest flung corners of their homeland to create something, well, inspirational. On their way they went to ghost towns, outsider art shrines, national parks, small community halls and the absolute middle-of-nowhere-ness of the highland wilderness, as well as playing the largest gig of their career (and in Icelandic history) at their triumphant homecoming Reykjavik show. 'Heima' (Icelandic for "at home" or "homeland"), truly, shows Sigur Rós as never before. Whereas seeing the group live is normally a large-scale and sometimes overwhelming experience, making full use of lights and mesmeric visuals, 'Heima' was always intended to reveal more of what was actually going on on stage. It does this via long-held close-ups and a rare intimate proximity, without ever once breaking the spell. At Þingvellir -- literally "Parliament Plains" -- the Alþing general assembly was established around 930 and continued to convene there until 1798. Major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir and therefore the place is held in high esteem by all Icelanders. Today Þingvellir is a protected national shrine. According to the law, passed in 1928, the protected area shall always be the property of the Icelandic nation, under the preservation of the Alþing.
